Coolest thing I've ever seen was a glass door on a wood stove implode into the stove and about 60 foot flames coming out of the chimney. Creosote fires are awesome, as long as they're not happening in your home.

I knew about glass like that, but jeez, that'd be expensive for an exit tube!

And this whole thread is cool as hell.
I have the software on my older computer. I do use it on some situations.

The biggest tuning aid I'm using now is a spreadsheet I made from Ben Straders EFI 101 class. I have made a few versions of it and now have one that helps me with BSFC on throttle light load.

Thanks for the kind words!!! I'm to a Hot Rodder with a racing back ground, and now have falling for the fuel economy/performance side of the coin.

mentioning the spreadsheet reminded me of something. May or may not help, but the info's interesting nonetheless.

It looks like they only make it for Honda's, its hard to tell as parts of the site don't work. I think I have found one for my Jeep though.

Have you tried injecting a little H2 into the engine to help lower your AF ratio?

From what I understand it should increase the flame speed, and make it easier to ignite.

edit to add: running open loop all the time is throwing me for a loop.

Haha, you are not alone. I'm constantly researching mods for more power and efficiency from my TDI. However, the performance is clearly on a different level to your del sol. I don't exactly have the time or resources to entertain a build like yours, either.

However a well built/tuned big turbo TDI should be able to hit 250 WHP and maintain 60+ mpg in an aero-modded VW.... lesser goals for both performance and economy... I know, I know..

Awesome stuff here though. Haven't been around the site so much recently but this thread is fun to watch. Can't wait to see the #'s!

Neptune is a Honda only system.

I'm not to much into H2.

Open loop is where it reads and runs off pre-programed load/rpm tables. The values in these tables are my inputs. The O2 sensor doesn't adjust anything on my system.

Cool another one like me.LOL

I would love to do a TDI performance/economy car also. Just not enough time as of right now.

Oh and Thanks

I'll probably be asking more detailed questions latter on in the year when my project starts nearing the programming stage.

The research I have been doing prior to rebuilding the engine is what lead me to this site and your thread.

My plans are a bit different than yours though but with similar end results.

Engine block Jeep 4.2L I6
Head Jeep 4.0L I6 with multipoint fuel injection.
Head work to include minor port work (mostly cleaning up casting imperfections and to get the air to swirl in the cylinder)
chamber and valve coatings to help keep detonation down
12:1 compression
Long tube header
Roller cam with good low to mid range performance

My targets are
250hp under 4500rpm
300flb torque under 3500rpm
25mpg at 75mph (if I get results similar to what you are trying for it could be as high as 30mpg which would be impressive for a cinderblock)
1gph when on the trails (with what I'm learning from you it might get as low as 0.5gph, the 4cyl 2.4l in my pickup burns 1gph)

I will be glad to help in anyway I can. Sounds like you have done your research on your project. Looks like it will be fun!

Heres a pic of my low cam fuel map with raw numbers that I change while tuning.
