It looks like the manufacturer of my battery 5 years ago might be out of business. They never answered my enail queries last month.

I think I will just open the pack... hey, are their gloves people wear to protect themselves from electric shock by these batteries? (See how much of a noob I still am?)

If you're worried about getting shocked, wear some rubber gloves. They don't have to be real thick. Wrap the shaft of your screwdriver with a couple of layers of electrical tape and you won't have to worry about shorting the batteries with it.

So I began to open it up today, and I am (of course) confused because totally inexperienced. To me this looks like 70 maybe Panasonic 18650 Lithium Ion cells. The battery is a 14ahr, 36volt battery. It fully charged at about 41.8 volts.

OK.That kind of makes sense for a 10 series 7 parallel pack with 2000 mah/cell.The mah would stay the same for the series section at 2000 mah/10 cells. Then by paralleling they would multiply by 2000 by 7 to give you 14000 mah or 14 Ah. Also the voltages you stated would be 36 volts nominal with ten cells in series and fully charge to approximately 42 volts. However, if you paid for Lifepo4 cells you kind of got ripped off because Lifepo4 has two to three time the life expectancy of standard lithium ion. Lifepo4 should be have 1500-2000 full recharge cycles where lithium ion only has 500-1000.

That is great, JJ! Thanks a ton. Now I know for sure what I actually have. No more educated guessing. But check this out ....

While further dismantling and inspecting, reading, finding the BMS board... I realize that I think I did my voltage test wrong two months ago, when I gave it up for lost. I did not have the key! So I go find the key, turn the switch on and this...

AFTER ONE FIREWORKS DISPLAY OF SPARKS and then nearly 2 years of sitting without charging the pack is down about 1 volt from full charge. I would say that it is a pretty good sign. Now I just gotta put it together safely and solder on a replacement charging connection (I burned the other one).

I'm thinking of going back to the idea of modifying my battery box, attaching a new charging connector, and replacing the key with a breaker switch because I hate carrying the key, have to have a good lock anyway, and I could save a few ounces weight. Reading this as tutorial: https://www.electricbike.com/the-onoff-switch/

Maybe this switch: https://www.monsterscooterparts.com/...yABEgKJs_D_BwE

Logging in for the first time in about three years to share this update with you all:

Today marks the 8th anniversary of this evBike that I built here on this forum. Have ridden it over 6,000 miles so far. This photo is its current configuration. That is the original battery. It was at least 52lbs when I first built it. Its handling was awkward, too, because so much weight was high and distributed to the ends. It now weighs about 39lbs and the weight is more central and low. I am also 20lbs lighter now and much stronger. Love it. Commute on it all the time.
