This thread has 1,235 posts about the Elio, which is not going anywhere quickly, and seven regarding the Arcimotor, which quietly made far more progress.

Elio:
Founded in 2008
Five prototypes
84 MPG for $6,800 (672-mile range)
Perpetually over a year from production

Arcimotor:
Also founded in 2008 (?)
Eight prototypes
Electric, with a 70-mile range, for $11,900 (130-mile version available)
Shipping in November 2015

So, half a Leaf, for 41% of the price?

I would like to see what happens with it, though. Freebeard, perhaps you could start a new thread?

Thread is longer as Ellio has had more visibility since 2008. I responded in full at the Arcimotor thread.

Our vapor is more productive than Elio's.

There was a comment in the Arcimoto thread about the Elio not actually achieving 84 MPG.

It is supposed to weigh 1,250 pounds, but I guess that it cannot be as simple as half of the weight of a compact car, so twice the fuel economy. Isn't our rule of thumb that if you reduce the weight or increase the aerodynamics by 2%, you increase fuel economy by 1%? The Spark, Mirage, and Note are 2,029 - 2,414 pounds and are rated 36-42 MPG highway. 38-52% lighter would, in theory, indicate 19-26% more fuel efficient, so 45.3 - 50.1 MPG.

Which many of us achieve in cars with four wheels, five seatbelts, and a full trunk.

What other factors affect fuel economy? Where can we start with where I am wrong?

Well, the Elio will weigh half as much and have half the drag, too. That helps a lot.

It was I who question the possibility of 84 mpg EPA rated. First aerodynamics hardly come into play in an EPA test, the speeds only average 48 mph in the "high speed" highway test. Even a first gen Insight only gets 59 highway in the EPA test with a manual, the automatic CVT only 49. A 1900 pound hybrid with aerodynamic attention and a 1 liter lean burn engine. If the Elio could even match it I would be impressed but 84 mpg is about impossible in an EPA test for any car.

Several others like that centurion prove high mpg can be achieve by combining a light weight vehicle with aerodynamics. It is not even a question. If your moving less air and your vehicle only weighs 1250 lbs you will get the mpg.

If you can live without FWD and do a RWD reverse trike fully areo you could get the same mpg for much less money.

Safety is the big buzz word, and I get it. I am not sure I would feel safe driving a smart car that as it is about 1/2 the length of a normal car.
