Our purpose here is to make it painfully apparent to any auto engineer that they have a long way to go to get to the real efficiency potential of their designs. 43 years ago an Opel got 124 MPG while averaging 26 MPH, about the same speed as the city EPA rating averages.
42 years and how much better have we become.
No where near close enough.
11th fastest lap at the Ring. Cudos to Ford to do that with a streetable engine that can beat 100 MPG at 35 MPH.
Boy would I love to see that setup in a tall geared Fiesta lightweight. 3k RPM at 90 MPH and 2100 pounds dry weight. Aero it up a little, maybe a hair below .25 CD with some tires as good as the first gen Insight's Bridgestones.
Then I can wait for the first one n the country to get sent to a salvage auction, hit in the rear like my VX.
regards
Mech

FWIW I drove the 1.6 LiterFocus Wagon in Germany & Poland a year ago, feeble performance and only 37MPG at its best. Skeptical of what a 1.0 might do.

This should be a different engine. Ecoboost improvements should make a difference. Were you driving in a spirited fashion? As in, of you were testing the disappointing performance, and managed 37, I would be impressed.
I am neither fighting for or against the engine you tested, or the new one- just interested.

I used all the techniques I do driving my Honda getting 35MPG when it's rated for 30MPG. I did get after it a few times, but I lived with the car for 3 weeks and put 2,500 miles on it, so it wasn't like a 3 day half tank deal. I kept a fuel log cause, ya know, once you get into the "Habit" of logging every tank and filling up every time, ya can't just quit because you're out of town.
Anyway, it was a dog, and no matter how carefully I drove it, same thing 36-37MPG on a car rated for 30 City/49 Hwy/39 Comb. I put a lot of highway miles on it. It was a manual 6 speed. I see the 1L is rated 39/56/47 with the same low HP so hopefully it returns better mileage, to me it would be worth not having any kind of acceleration and passing power, to get 45MPG. I just hated so-so economy and crap for power
It handled great, I liked how it looked, it was black with a dark grey interior, it was comfortable to drive. It had gobs of room being a wagon, and I had my music on a jumpdrive so I put that into the entertainment system and was able to play it. The side mirrors folded when you locked it which was quaint.
I didn't like the closed in feel of the front seats, the center console just filled the front end. You feel like you're sitting down inside it, the bottom of the front windscreen and door glass is a few inches higher than I'm used to. But, I do drive an 04 Civic which I sit tall in (I'm 6'1" and wear 30" inseam pants) and is known for its more spacious feel. Oh, one last gripe, one of those things you don't notice till you get on the highway...No Cruise Control. FTW, so maybe this knocked a few MPG's out of the stuffing.
The Garmin GPS that was installed from the factory was god awful, not a reflection on Ford per se, just a point of note, I have a different Garmin that works great.

That is a totally bogus comparison. The EPA test accelerates and decelerates by quite a lot, coming to a complete stop more than once, with the engine running the whole time. If I remember correctly, the Opel exclusively used Pulse-and-Coast with the engine off during the coast phase. It was also designed for only fuel economy, with no consideration given to passengers or heating and cooling or cargo or ANYTHING that wasn't about pulling miles per gallon.
Your point is valid, but the comparison is horribly bogus and takes away from your point.

You hit the nail on the head. Theres no replacement for displacement. I put 1000 miles on a DSG focus with the american market 2.0 DI engine and averaged 35.5mpg over 3 fill ups with AC on all the time. At its best (55mph, 6th gear AC off) the 2.0 engine was well into the 40s.
It would be a shame to ruin the current focus with that 3 cyl piece of trash.

Ford put the 1.6L Ecoboost in the USDM Ford Fusion. Which surprised me a bit. I thought they were going to put that into the Focus.

All three of these quotes below contradict Ford's statement in the original article linked in this thread's OP. Ford says the 1L ecoboost is coming to the USA in Summer 2013. Where are you guys reading that Ford's June 2012 statement on the 1L ecoboost is not true, or has changed? I'd like to know.

Sorry for the confusion, I'm talking about priority and forgot to add that I thought the Focus was getting the 1.6L Ecoboost first. I wasn't trying to suggest that the ecoboost option was canceled for the Focus or anything of the sort.

I really don't like this new crop of turbocharged engines. They all advertise full boost at just over 1000rpm. To get that most of them are decreasing the turbine efficiency as they aren't using VGTs, and building up quite a bit of backpressure in the exhaust (even with electronically controlled wastegates I imagine). A 1 liter engine is probably going to be at high enough load levels on the highway to generate some non-trivial amount of exhaust pressure like this.
