Ford Ecoboost 3-cyl Summer 2013
Another update on this topic, the only new information being that summer 2013 is the target. The tone of the Ford statements and the AP writer seems more certain now about the launch and what place it will have in the market (challenging hybrids): Ford to offer tiny 3-cylinder engine in US - Yahoo! Finance

It is true that the more efficient the non-hybrid alternatives become, the more difficult it will be to sell hybrids strictly on a cost-savings basis. The "economy car" segment has expanded a lot in the U.S. in the last 5 years. Ain't competition grand?

Competition is grand, we are finally getting a ford motor comparable to the european versions.

...all gruesomeness aside, I just wish the "cut-throat" competition would "cut-the-throats" of more of the gas-guzzlers and actually give us (USA/NA) more real FE vehicles!

My 1992 geo convertible came with 50 hp.
This lil beast comes with 123hp.
60hp would of sufficed, if it was a true economy car.
I know people add 100hp to their 3 cylinders but it is not at all needed.
Oil companies must be up in arms over all these high rpm low mpg vehicles that are hitting the pumps.
Ass backwards engineering if i do say so my self.. I was hoping for a gas miser out of this revamped 3 banger. Bummer
its specs below
Engine:
Turbo 1.0L I3
Power:
123 HP / 125 LB-FT
Transmission:
6-Speed Manual
0-60 Time:
11 Seconds (est.)
Drivetrain:
Front-Wheel Drive
Curb Weight:
2,800 LBS

It's a complaint that the gearbox isn't fuel- inefficient enough for the reviewers taste. This speaks volumes about how it was driven.
I'd bet some on this forum will be reporting nearly 50mpg after this is released.

In the US the general concensus is it will come in the Fiesta. I would like to see what my 2011 would do as a coupe with better aero, with that overgeared transmission and a 1 liter ecoboost, considering I am already averaging 45 MPG with the 1.6 engine and the powershift.
Plenty of Morons who can drive a car inefficiently, relatively few who can do the opposite.
regards
Mech

We're also getting a 100HP version in Europe.
With a bit of luck the US will get that in the Fiesta.

You don't have to use the HP, nor the rev range that comes with it
With 170Nm of torque from 1400rpm, the HP rating is but a by-product of the turbocharging and rpm.

This one is low rpm, high mpg though.
Local car journalists got 33 mpg - on a twisty road uphill.
On the highway, that dropped to 47 mpg (which is also the overall NEDC rating).
These puppies need to be driven like diesels.

Yeah, this is pathetic technology for technology's sake. The naturally aspirated 2.0 already in the Focus is more efficient and more powerful. This 1.0 rattle can is for the eco freak feel good crowd that likes to show off and not much else. Anyone want to take bets on how long before the oil lubricated timing BELT becomes a class action nightmare?
