The d15z1 will be stamped on the block right buy the trans and look for the 5 wire 02 sensor. Also the telltale egr controller box on the firewall. You could also get a cx less hp no lean burn but same transmission an not as finicky. No 200$ 02 sensor. There EPA rating is 40 I think I get 42-44 all day long without trying in that one. They are the same car just diffrent engines. Be patient. I found my cx after about 3 months. I missed a few vxs that were far away and pretty rotted out. Got mine in town 500$ purrs like a kitten needed nothing but brakes. Year later done nothing to it at all. Found a vx in town came from Arazonia not rust and got it cheep. Don't rush to buy. But it needs axles, 02, ignition switch and little do dads here and there. No wheels . Don't rush they come up all the time. Just be ready to pounce and have a price in mind 2500-4000$ for really nice needing nothing. There was one 30 min from me with 80,000 on the clock all original for 4000$ didn't have the cash. 92-93 no passenger airbag 94-95 pass airbag.

VX does have a few things over the CX other than just the engine, such as super light-weight wheels.

The motor choices there are actually 3 diffrent 1.5 the d15z1 vetec e only in vx then the 16 valve 1.5 in dx lx then the 8 valve 1.5 only in the cx then the 16 valve vtec 1.6 in the ex. Hope that helps vx cx really good fuel dx lx ok. There is also an si think it got the 1.6 and a really fast non fuel efficient trans. Hope that helps.

Yes it has a few aero mods and aluminum mounts but these are quite often gone an easy to put on a cx. I have both and I'm not liking the 02 cost. I also keep reading all these part throttle hesitation problems and plugged egr ports. If I could choose bone stock pristine examples of both I would obviously go for the vx. I'm just letting him know that the cx is also quite capable and less sought after and could be had for quite less. Sk unless lean burn is an absolute must. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all the help guys, really awesome of the community to take their time out for a new guy. I got my eye on a few really nice VX examples. With a little stroke of luck, I think I could be comparing MPGs with you guys by the weekend!

So just to have my facts straight, the North American Civic VX only came with one engine–the d15z1 VTEC-E motor. So my only remaining question is, what is the SIL denotion on the EPA site when choosing motors to view mileage? That motor shows better mileage than the non-SIL motor.

It could be California spec vs normal VX. I think the California one has a slightly different computer so it meets the higher emissions standards.

I have no Idea what the sil is but yes the Cali model has a diffrent ecu and 02. NO lean burn. Easily changed though yes in north America the only car to come from the factory with the d15z1 was the vx. It has been put into alot of other cars nowadays. Hey you can look at the hx as well they are also lean burn motors and come quite close in mpg. Good luck and don't rush you'll regret it.

Thanks again to all you guys. I think I'm well-equipped information-wise to go ahead with a purchase now. The one guy on the east coast has a salvage title but swears the car drives great. He's around $1500 but I think I could finagle it for around $1000. Thing is, cheap as it is, the car has a scary question mark attached to it. So my alternative is seeking the nicer, cleaner ones I'm watching but spending a few grand more..

I'll keep you all apprised as to what happens!

My cx has a rebuilt title drives great and 500$. Heck i was talking to a guy today and he had a civic hatch dx 93 and 250,000 original owner and gets 43 mpg all day long. My vx almost got salvaged for a fender and headlight. 966$ in damage. Don't rush I almost bought some crap and I'm glad I didn't.
