Generally, if you made the housing any larger than needed to contain the mirror of legal size, you've created unnecessary frontal area, and probably didn't help the cd much, either.

I live by KISS! In the world of engineering when cost and schedule are important (99% of the time) you will have much greater success making things stupid simple.

I first heard about the KISS method back in 1983 when I was working for a PE. I never new the origins until this thread. Cool history.

Sometimes it's hard work keeping things simple, but well worth it.

Yesterday while joy riding in my vintage 911, I swung by the drive-in A&W where a 1960 MGA convertible and 1968 RS Camaro were parked. The MGA had a dash mounted rear view mirror and no side mirrors, the owner drove it like this for 30 years. Claimed he had put only about $10,000 into it over the 30 years, despite replacing the steel frame ($150) and a quite a few other things.

If this mirror were large enough, you could even sneak in some downforce for racing.

My better judgement tells me the smaller the mirror, the better. However if you look at some motorcycle mirrors they can get pretty long, even though the glass/mirror area is the same.

I drew such a mirror up, with Gurney flap like spoilers it looks just like a Goldfish. However, it might work better, if it works at all, without these vortex creators.

In fact you might want to view this as a mirror image Kammback mirror, if there ever was such a thing.

I get crazy ideas all the time. You won't hurt my feeling if you think this one fails to swim up river.
You might find this interesting.

Especially Figures 12 and 13.

I'm assuming the black box on FB is blocking you from right clicking. Hit refresh (F5) and you'll get the old style image view. Then you right click the image and select "copy image location". Or if you use Internet Explorer, right click, go to image properties, and you'll find the address there.

Thanks for the link Jim.

Figure 11 is also interesting. A Cd of .27 for the truncated aerofoil, puts that shape in the same ballpark as the NASA sphere.

Shape Effects on Drag

Cd of .07 to .5 with the sphere, so a lot depends on the length of the aerofoil (Gurneyless goldfish FRONTAL AREA) to do a comparable. Why does the sphere have a "range" at all if the frontal areas are all the same in the NASA diagram?

The sphere, when utilized as a cannon ball was evaluated for drag and tables developed for its Cd by ballisticians as a function of sub-sonic and supersonic velocity to aid in firing solutions for the artillery branches of armed forces.
The Cd is usually portrayed as a function of MACH number and its Cd is quite literally, all over the map.
