Perihelion Day
I wondered if some people might think I was being politically correct and/or facetious when I started this thread way back when, what with our winter solstice being so close to Christmas and all.
Nope! I just enjoy nerding out on celestial events.
On that note: Happy Perihelion Day, everybody!
Thus ends the Pulse portion of our orbit. Ready for the Glide?
Also, I'm looking forward to the sun beginning to rise earlier again a few days.

I celebrate the same thing every year. Every day gets a little brighter and longer from here on out - which is important when you live in a cold climate!

Happy Soylent Green Year?
Quote:

Less well known is the year Soylent Green is set in: 2022. That's right, we've reached the point when Hollywood told us that millions of New Yorkers would be fighting each other over protein bars...

Population Bomb was published 5 years prior and predicted global famine in the 80s. Perhaps the writers for Soylent Green were just optimists?

This thread has gotten me thinking about celebrating real events instead of made-up holidays!

Happy summer solstice, northern hemispherians!
Anybody else got up early to see the 5 naked eye planets in order? This is your last chance for the next 20 years or so!
Currently the waning moon is cruising through the lineup.
I've tried twice so far, but haven't spotted Mercury yet. Still another week or so of good viewing though, before Mercury disappears into the glare of the sun.

Thank's for the tip. Maybe the weather will cooperate.
I think I've seen four total Solar eclipses so far. The best one was at the Stonehenge replica above the Columbia River.

I've never seen a total eclipse, but there's one sliding over my part of the world in 2024. I'm psyched.
