But with a second-weekend domestic of $145 million, which most movies only dream of reaching on opening. It reached the $2 billion mark in 11 days, compared to Avatar's 47. Speaking of Avatar, just 3 days ago Disney (which now owns 20th Century Fox, which distributed the original Avatar) announced that the sequels are delayed a year to 2021.
Meanwhile, Bob Iger is laughing all the way to the bank.

I enjoyed "Avatar," but still felt it was overrated.
Also, Unobtanium?

Of course the movie was overrated and absurd, as if anyone living today should feel even the tiniest amount of guilt for what happened to Native Americans hundreds of years ago. Heck, when I get those racist forms often published by government agencies asking what ethnicity I identify with, I always select Native American. I'm not native to anywhere else.
That reminds me how I refuse to use the term "African American" to describe black folk. Most black people in the US were not born in Africa, and it doesn't uniquely describe being black anyhow as 15% of people born in Africa are not black.
That said, the movie is most excellent for the high quality entertainment. It was the first 3D movie I had seen in theaters, and the scene where the paralyzed guy goes for a run in the Avatar made me smile for 5 minutes straight.
The movie fails to make any political point at all, or tell a deep story that anyone can identify with, but that doesn't matter in this case. It transports the viewer to another world in a convincing way, and that's good enough.
I'm hoping the Alien prequels start getting good. I feel like there's plenty of story to tell in that universe, and the opening scene to Prometheus was compelling, yet the movie failed to advance the story.

I thought both movies revolved around Parker Selfridge, the corporate administrator for the RDA mining operation, and Carter J. Burke the representative from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. In their respective movies they both play the same role.
I'm up for (or is it down with?) the phosphorescent forests.

Race is funny. I'm white as anything, but calling me "white" calls on me to take ownership of what was aimed at my family generations ago and right up to my own time. Reparations are a great idea, but when do we set the time on them? Even right before I was born there was a big argument about whether my people had blended in enough to be considered real Murricans.

I had happily forgotten about that insufferable brat since the first time that I learned of her existence on Imgur. Someone shared a picture David Spade took with her and allegedly he posted that she was not happy about her fame ending fifteen minutes previous.
The only picture that I can find with them shows her smiling and the entire experience made me miss frantically searching for terms that my professor had not covered in her lectures and were not in the textbook, but were on the quizzes, tests, and the final.

I watched Captain Marvel last week. People keep asking me which movie, to which I reply "Captain Marvel", but somehow that doesn't clear things up. Perhaps Marvel releasing 22 movies since 2007 has created the confusion.
Anyhow, the movie was terrible. I don't know why they made it, and I hope they didn't spend much money on it. The costumes even look cheap. Certainly a waste of money to have Sam Jackson and Jude law in it, the only 2 recognisable actors.
That said, I've never really liked fantasy movies because they always break the laws of the universe they create, or just plainly don't solve conflicts in a reasonable way. Take The Lord of the Rings for instance. They spent 3 movies trying to melt a ring... it accidentally gets destroyed, then they fly out in a few seconds. It makes you wonder why they didn't fly there in the first place, toss the evil thing into the volcano, then do something more productive with their time.
There are good fantasy movies though. Eternal Sunshine was good, and Avatar was entertaining. Wizard of Oz is among my favorites, as well as The Princess Bride.

Back when the thread was shiny and new, the competition was between Captain Marvel and Alita:Battle Angel. Have you seen both so you can make a comparison?
A list of stories that were strip-mined ruthlessly before they were ever made into movies: - John Carter of Mars/Princess of Mars
- Valérian and Laureline
