These sorts of things don't exist. It's not NASCAR, after all

When you find people who are willing to pay to watch cars drive slowly around a track, with minimal chances of crashes, let us know!

that would be fun, I have thought of it.

a maine to western alaska hypermiler rally...quickest time, least fuel. its only 4500 miles or so. my old sube made it once. I think it could do it again. its not just about fuel mileage....

What machines would make it self sustaining, one drivetrain allowed, spare parts on board...at what mileage...any power engineered, internal combustion or not.

to be a chauvinist to some of you..it would be the greatest fuel mileaged vehicle, workable, meant for a heterosexual man. So very rare. what ashame.
no transcontinental contest for us...

maybe a synchro vanagon and a 1980s sube..

When I read in Reader's Digest - April 2008 about Wayne Gerdes getting 180.91 MPG. in the Hybridfest MPG Challenge race in Madison, Wisconsin I was hooked. When Wayne won the race he got a subscription to Green Car Journal, and a $25 gas card which wasn't much. But he and Reader's Digest which got the story out created a fire, and that fire is burning to this day! A revolution. It changed my life and will save me thousands of dollars in gas I don't have to buy. I started to learn everything I could about saving fuel. I drove twice as far on the same amount of gas. I am grateful for the knowledge I gained from the fire they started.

I was thinking of taking my 99 Metro out to the racetrack (Colorado National Speedway) and hypermile it when they let you race your Daily Driver. It was just a thought. Technically people would be paying to see that!

The inherent problem in this is the catch-22 of using gas.

Hypermilers try to stretch every gallon to the max mileage, for whatever reason.

Hypermilers save gas.

Racing from one point to another just to race is a waste of gas.

That's where the problem comes in.

I think the race is here (ecomodder) on the top ten list. The cash prize is the money you have saved.
How exciting is that?

I just thought of something related to McTimsons post Put a hypermiler in with the nascar races. They would have to pass him. Kind of like those old electric TCR race tracks that had the slower jam car for forced passing. That would increase the the challenge for the drivers and guaranteed to increase qty of wrecks. We wouldn't want to sacrifice a real hypermiler though we need more of them.
