The standard hatch was less spacious, especially the trunk. The rear bench could slide forward though and the backs more upright, then you could dump the luggage of 4 friends for a week, a TV, a computer, a ghetto blaster and then some in it. Just the bare essentials

"Could these companies be trying to gauge buyers' reactions to strikingly different designs — or even prepare us for more radical-looking vehicles to come?"
I saw a Volvo C30 on the street the other day. It's been one of my favorite hatchbacks.

How about the Tritan A2... a three wheeler with a 440cc rotary (!) engine:
More info:
https://www.allcarindex.com/auto-car...A2--Aerocar-2/
Quote:
The unique design of the A2 has such low wind resistance that it requires only half as much horsepower as a motorcycle, and only a third as much as a car. The very low drag coefficient (Cd) of .150 translates into extreme aerodynamic stability for such a lightweight vehicle (weight is approx. 900 pounds, depending on drive train installed).
The vehicle’s Amick Arch can handle gusty crosswinds (while its vertical airfoil-shaped fixed sails convert side wind to forward thrust). Centers of gravity, side pressure, and lateral resistance are optimized to provide maximum vehicle safety.
Body is monocoque/fiberglass construction, with urethane nose and tail bumpers. Can be registered in most U.S. states as a motorcycle.
Other safety features: wedge-shaped front end that tends to deflect impacts; a highly visible profile in traffic; panoramic windshields; a collapsible steering column; exceptional aerodynamic stability; all-weather radial tires; quartz halogen headlights; and a manually operated emergency brake.
Engine & performance:
Position: Rear
Type: Rotary SP-440
Capacity: 440 cc
Power: 30hp @ 5500 rpm
Drive: RWD
Top speed: 153 km/h
0-100 km/h: 17 s
Dimensions:
Length: 4166 mm
Width: 1753 mm
Height: 1346 mm
Wheelbase: 2159 mm
Weight: 408 kg

Highly unpractical cars though
You pictured some prototype / design study
The real thing in the Volvo Museum, Goteborg:

That is a Volvo 3CC. It was an electric 3-seater that got 180 miles range per charge and could top out at 85 mph. Drag coefficient was 0.25 if I remember correctly.

The mew passat variants (station wagon) seem to be fairly aerodynamic. But i cannot seem to find any data on them.

I like that thing. It's like if you took the idea of a donk and made it into a solar-electric eco-machine. Never seen one of those that looked remotely stylish AND aero.
