Even that old cell phone above uses an LCD. It's been the standard display for flat screens for a very long time.
I agree that virtual buttons suck compared to physical buttons, but the benefits outweigh the drawback on small portable devices. Not having to dedicate space for buttons, and the ability to rearrange the buttons as needed is a huge benefit.
I'm waiting for mind reading technology to develop. Why convert thought to physical input? Much more efficient to use thought as the input.

Odds are it's a passive matrix.
https://electronics.howstuffworks.com/lcd4.htm
My Powerbook 100 has a passive matrix display, two colors (blue and orange? Green and purple? It hasn't been booted in a while) instead of black and white.

Such LCD was just for read numbers, and I have no problem with it at all.
I bet mind reading will have many fails, like transcript together some anoying music that don't go out your head in a given hour, or transcript the body of some lady passing by.

I would often curse the early flip phones with color screens. The old B/W LCDs didn't require a backlight to read, and in fact became more readable the more sunlight there was. Then color was introduced, which added no value to a dumb phone, and then the backlight was required in all lighting conditions and was unreadable in bright sunlight.
Modern phones to this day suffer from being barely readable in sunlight.
Whew, All Darc finally got me to rant about LCD!

In 23 century they still have some troubble displays that require rooms light insulation to be allowed a good view.
What excuse Star Trek fans will create to explain this ?
Maybe it was a special real 3D view (not just stereoscopy) that project images on retina. After all, all the 2D display looks fine on the bridge.

Physical buttons are not just easier for an average user, but they also make it easier to adapt to visually-impaired and old people. No wonder some shops highlight some cheap phones with large buttons as "good for seniors".

Even though there are some technical approaches to the accessibility issue in touchscreen devices, I still believe a physical interface might retain some market share. Otherwise, nobody would be buying those physical keyboards sold as accessories for tablets.

That's somewhat predictable. Well, some days I also have felt my wrists a bit painful after using a smartphone while I was still getting used to the touchscreen interface (still hate it anyway).
