garbage bag skin looks... garbage baggy
Tail update - yes, I'm still working on this!
I gave it 2 coats of oil-based paint. Then I started wrapping it in 3mil plastic on the weekend. To be honest, it looks like what it is: something wrapped in garbage bags! I had been hoping for better aesthetics, but the spray adhesive reacted with the plastic or oil paint, and it turned out wrinkly. Not sure if this plastic will shrink if heated, but I may try that.
Mostly, I've just adjusted my expectations!
I just keep reminding myself: this is a proof of concept; As much as it would be a bonus if it turned out pretty, I'm not going to spend a lot of time on finishing work.
Pics to come.
I'm going on a ~350 km trip next weekend, and this weatherproof cardboard tail will be on the car. If the weather cooperates, I'm expecting ~100 MPG (US) for the round trip, with a target cruising speed at the posted limit (80 km/h - 50 mph).

ZigZag tape comes as a self-adhesive tape.
It wouldn't be much trouble to reproduce it in cardboard and glue it on though

The old "lobed" nozzles reduced efficiency - i.e. 707 / DC-8 hush kits - along with noise.
But what I remember reading about the 787 serrated rear edges is that they improved efficiency ... while still cutting down noise and vibes.

A simple strip of 1 to 1.5 mm high VGs undeniably changed the air flow pattern on Hägar's A pillar and side windows, quietening wind noise as well.

Agreed !
I've seen several YouTube videos where they are placing vortex generators on airplane wings, and it makes them more efficient, especially considering the purpose: to keep flow from separating prematurely.

I suspect zigzag tape would only "work" where there's laminar flow. It's just too thin, and the boundary layer is way too thick and turbulent over most of the car -- and getting worse the further back you go.
---
Plastic wrapped tail turned out not horrible!
A heat gun blowing all over the 3 mil plastic worked reasonably well to smooth it out. It was VERY wrinkly before -- even after trying hard to make it taut while laying it on the spray adhesive.
I'm leaving this AM for a long-ish weekend highway trip. Fingers crossed for the "big 100" ...
