Been using a plug in mower since 98. Had a real hard time finding one here, wife said I was crazy, coworkers said I would hate it. The sales lady tried to talk me out of it saying I would electrocute myself. Been using it ever since with no problems. It is great not having to have any gas stored in the garage.

My lawn is less than 150 sq ft.

I thought about using sheep when I lived in Scotland many years ago but the landlord and neighbors were not enthusiastic about it.

Has anyone converted a mower to run on battery power? And wouldn't a reel mower (think push mower from the 30s; runs off push power) use less power to run vs a rotary mower? Seems and electric go cart with a couple reel mowers attached would be highly efficient

Most wired mowers have a circuit breaker which stops you getting electricuted if you run over the wire. If you don't trust that or its an old one you can buy a breaker which plugs in between the wall and the mower. Or better still get your house fusebox changed to breakers and protect all plugs.

As someone who has cut the wire (UK 240v AC) I recommend the breaker.

I am amazed at how many corded and cordless electric mowers and old-fashioned reel-mowers are available at local hardware stores.

It looks like people are really starting to take in interest in that sort of thing.

I was able to help my mom remove all the grass in her back yard and most in the front. She's an avid gardener and has used low ground cover between walking stones around all her flower beds.

The best push mower I've seen is an old gas mower less the gas engine, a GM electric radiator fan motor was mounted in it's place with a plastic bush blade and powered using two gel cells charged via a 5w solar panel mounted to the handle, the owner would leave it outside to charge.

Awesome Ben!

There has been more than a few months where I consumed more gallons of fuel on lawn maintenance than in my car.

Cordless is the only way to go, I have a Newton lawnmower at home. It uses a 24 volt battery which I have two of so I alternate them in use, and it will do two property's no problem.
Also at my friends greenhouse operation we built a trolley to go down the houses with two Black & Decker cordless mowers suspended from it to trim the plants to make them bushy. It adjusts up and down and the rack slides sideways on the trolley, it saves days of man hours to trim the plants.

Great job on the mower! There is something to be said about a reasonably sized lawn to run about or lay in if you don't live anywhere near a park (or even if you do). Not that I think you don't get it Ben (because I'm sure you really really do), but just as an appropriate place to link to this for the curious: Food not Lawns.

Neddy Seagoon.

I love my Newton. I bought it in 2005.
I have one of the first ones.
12 volt, 18 inch.
Love their customer service too.
Last year my weed-eater attachment broke.
I called for a replacement,
They sent me a new one,
No Charge!
Said to just throw out the old one.
I am considering getting one of the new, 24 volt units.
Probably won't, there is nothing wrong with mine.
