Yes, but there is clear evidence of vortices spinning off the C-pillars, as well as quite a lot of turbulance in the reattachment at the trailing end of the decklid. Beautiful car, too!

Yes. Nice find. They build to theory using simple materials and then test, then revise the build based on the findings and test again. What the best EM threads do.

Mercedes-Benz Aerodynamics: Emotion meets efficiency

When it comes to wind resistance, noise levels, open-top driving comfort and anti-soiling measures, i.e. in all aerodynamic disciplines, models from Mercedes-Benz have taken the leading position in almost all vehicle classes for many years. This demonstrates that an exciting, emotional design and high aerodynamic efficiency are not contradictory. With the new aeroacoustics wind tunnel at the development centre in Sindelfingen, the company has now also taken the lead in aerodynamic testing.....................
With the "large wind tunnel" in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, Mercedes-Benz was the first automobile manufacturer to possess a wind tunnel – the first documented measurement was carried out there exactly 70 years ago, on 5 February 1943....................

I don't think we ever discussed this topic.

The battle for clear visibility is another area of activity for the wind tunnel specialists. The aim is to direct the airflow so that a clear view through the side windows and of the exterior mirrors is ensured even in murky weather conditions.

[citation needed] but, if IIRC, Mercedes Benz put horizontal ribs on their taillights so that dust wouldn't collect on them,

I think you forgot the link to the article, Kach22i:

About 10 or 12 years ago, it seemed to me, Mercedes started producing a number of aero-slick body shapes. Some of them made me rethink Germany. I remember a beautiful large Mercedes coupe (CLS 550?) ten or 12 years ago with a fab bowed/arched trunk lid separation point. Beautiful car. The newer C class is slick too, though not as pretty, IMO. Audi and VW had some larger coupes with similar aero/aesthetic features at the time... all of it seems to be in line with this philosophy of "emotional" and aerodynamically effective design. They seem to be on the leading edge again. Totally took a certain kind of cutting edge lead from Toyota, whose Prius shape lots of people recoil against.
