Their battery pack is pretty well placed, completely behind the front crash structure. For side impact, I have a feeling its low enough to avoid direct impacts. But of course manufacturers don't necessarily design for 85+ if he was that bold

[Officer] Vukovich said he likely will cite Scaglione after he completes his investigation, but he declined to specify the charge. Anyone who has driven on the Pennsylvania Turnpike knows that its narrow shoulders and concrete medians leave little margin for driver error. There's not enough evidence to indicate that Tesla's Autopilot malfunctioned.

Just a month before the fatal accident, Brown posted a video on YouTube of his car using the same "Autopilot" feature to swerve and avoid a side collision.

Brown praised “Tessy’s” Autopilot feature for swerving as a truck tried to cut him off on an exit ramp.

“I actually wasn't watching that direction and Tessy (the name of my car) was on duty with Autopilot engaged,”
Man killed using Tesla's Autopilot posted close call month before

I'm coming down on the side of evolution on this. Speeding - indeed, a history of it - inattention, misplaced blind trust despite repeated warnings. He was looking for trouble and found it. The kicker is that Tesla gets a big nasty flaming bag of poo on its porch as a result, which isn't entirely warranted.

From what I've read (which I'm not sure I entirely believe), the truck driver says the Tesla was out of sight behind a hill (Hill? In Florida?) when he started the turn. So yeah, if you and/or your autopilot are travelling too fast to react to crossing traffic (or deer, alligators, &c), there's a problem.

Pree-cisely why it disturbs me that Arcimoto is talking about autonomous operation. That and 'attack surface'.

Arcimoto seems like a great company, but I do not believe they have resources equal to Tesla's, and the latter still has major issues to resolve.

Would an autonomous truck have made that turn?

Before an overarching panopticon with 5G uplinks to enable intervehicular chatter; I'd prefer each vehicle merely broadcast it's vector, intention and the net worth of the occupants.
