Solar kills way more people. Roofing is the top 3 most dangerous jobs, any solar that goes up on a residential home is pretty much "roofing" but with even more stuff to trip over than a typical roofing job.

Zombie wind power thread? it's been four years?
I like this because it combines two technologies that I follow, vertical axis windmills and gravity batteries. ...and Bucky Fuller's favorite thing -- tension!
I do wonder about a free-floating hull like the FLIP boats, with a larger mass moving over a shorter distance. Maybe it would reduce down to a lake-shore diving platform with a derrick.

Initial thought is I don't like it. There's nothing special about the weight being attached to the generator unless that weight serves double-duty saving cost or reducing complexity. The video didn't mention anything thing about that. As it is, looks like a more complex thing, and no explanation of how the design would reduce the LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy).
Also, water is way more dense than air, so having the weight underwater is a disadvantage as far as efficiency is concerned. Those weights would be pumping enormous amounts of water as it gets displaced with movement.
I put this in the category of kite wind turbines.

Firstly they don't use a VAWT. Imagine trying to exert force at arms length vs close held.
Putting the weight internal to a FLIP hull was my extrapolation. A sea-going installation would have a minimum [IMHO] of six positioning anchor cables (displacement plus torque). one guide cable for the operative mass, and one or more lift cables to transfer power. It might need two, one to lift and another to feed the generator.
And those HAWTs? They need a need a wickrerbill , or whatever they call those ribs on the noses of velomobiles, that is a blown Coanda nozzle on both sides. This would protect the leading edge, but would be localized enough to not reduce the overall efficiency of the blade. Prove me wrong.
I am totally intrigued by this. It looks like the ultimate weekend getaway/bolthole.

2nd thought is I don't like wind or PV as energy solutions because of their intermittency and need for much larger engineering projects to store the extremely diffuse power.
As far as renewables go, my instinct is to favor geothermal and tidal since these sources are reliable and can be integrated into the grid with less engineering.

Agreed on tidal and geothermal. I think the gravity battery answers some of the shortcomings of wind.

With out natural gas wind and solar would be impossible.
You can see the huge swings in wind power output in just a few hours and natural gas power plants compensating.
Coal power plants also cut in and out depending on demand but they operate in an on/off manor.

Presently, there are about 1-million abandoned onshore oil wells in the United States. Each one a Superfund site.
Each one will have to be properly plugged. At taxpayer expense.
Collectively, they represent millions of thousands of linear feet of abandoned steel pipe buried, and lost to the US economy.
Perhaps the American Petroleum Institute would like to absorb the total cost of decommissioning all these orphaned wells, and then we can recycle all that wasted steel, rather then mine for it.

If global population actually peaks at 10-billion, then we're near a point where less and less new infrastructure will need to be built out.
Mining and processing, and transporting will be saturated and it will just come down to maintenance from there.
If we could get Russian cobalt out of all US and global oil refining, we could probably reduce the toxic footprint of gasoline and diesel production.
