Yeah, so it's incredibly dumb.

Another minor consideration, if the earth is already too warm, what will redirecting even more solar energy at us do?

I read Isaac's book on this subject once, and you really don't want technical problems that cause focused energy to miss the target, let alone malicious intent. I wonder how PETA feels about having a 10,000 square mile deadzone where every living thing gets fried when they cross into it?

I am curious about the bell-shaped collector.

Much like the space elevator, it seems to be a better fit for the Moon.

Many things would be made simpler on the moon. I like to imagine a rail or similarly low rolling resistance road constructed very evenly around the moon, and a bicycle with extraordinary range in gearing. Such a setup could allow speeds of hundreds or thousands of MPH with just meager human power. Somewhere around 3758 MPH the rider would become weightless and orbit the moon with no further input of energy. MPG would be practically infinite.

What I'd give to hit a golf ball on the moon.

Everything will get [grinded/ground] out of tolerance by that uneroded dust everywhere.

Some back-of-napkin calculations, using an approximate atmospheric density of the moon of 10^-9 that of Earth, a typical CDA for a rider on the hoods of 0.40 m^2, and assuming that rider can hold 25 mph in Earth's atmosphere (leaving aside rolling resistance for this example)--with the same power output would result in a speed of approximately 403,000 kph on the Moon. Yowza!

At that speed on that size a body, there would be a large angular momentum component. Did you include that?

You mean, like, at 3758 MPH the rider would be weightless?

Since none of this is real, and the gearing required to ride at that speed would be unimaginably huge...nope.

To maintain "a speed of approximately 403,000 kph on the Moon" the largest energy vector would be pointed toward the center of mass.

Now the oomph provided by our natural satellite's rotation is greatest at its equator. Since the equatorial radius of the Moon is 1738.1 km, the uncorrected escape velocity is 2375.42 m/sec. Subtracting .7363 yields a corrected value of [math]2374.68[/math] meters/second…assuming an optimal launch direction.
Escape velocity is 1/5th of Earth's. ....Theoretically.
