GM LUJ engine 1.4L electronic throttle control, sequential multi-port fuel injectors. 72.5 X 82.6mm bore X stroke. Stock GM engine. Turbo: apparently runs around 16 psi according to forum responses on cruze talk (I do not have a boost gauge yet). I could not find anything regarding the turbo specs anywhere, not even the impeller size. I can tell you it is pretty tiny though and produces 148 ft-lb at 1850 rpm.

I would think a scan gauge should work for seeing knock?

The other hurdle will be if you lean it out what will the stock computer do? It might go into limp mode if you don't have a way to over ride it? So you might look into HP Tuners or one like it.

Well the Talon is ready for winter. I raised her up another 2.5" and put the stock wheels and Blizzaks on her today.

I appreciate all of your advice thus far. In your opinion with the current set up (a non-performance small turbo that is designed more for fuel economy and to make a gutless 1.4 feel like a V6), should I really have to worry about burning a hole in a piston or creating a hot spot even if the the fuel mixture were to lean out for a little bit? Or is that only seen on high performance vehicles?

There is always an risk.

The fuels octane and engines compression and ignition timing advance, all play a major role in keeping the combustion in check. Its a lot of trial and error.

What I have found is that on a turbo engine you need the the intake charge to be cool to keep from detonating when runinng lean. The cool air keeps combusting temps down and the air itself is now the main thermal management system instead of the stock fuel rich condition.

Also on my car I had to adjust the boost levels as winter is here. This Summer I was at 12 psi at 20:1 with my IAT temps at 90*F, now I'm at 10 psi at 20:1 with my IAT temps around 50*F while making the same power as I did this Summer.

Amazing what a change in ride height and wheel/tire will do to the car's overall appreance. It's a good lokking car anyway, but it no longer looks like a street racer. It looked pretty aggressive before with the low height and Hoosier shoes.

EDIT: What a sleeper! Think of the surprises under that hood!

I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.

Its pretty crazy. Now the Talon doesn't even get look at. I kinda like it that way.

Update:

This probably one of my most boring updates. I have testing to see what the effects of waste solvent has on my fuel system. Its kinda like watching paint dry.lol

Anyway so far so good all seal are in great shape and holding up well to the strong solvents.

Yep still driving around and testing a few things. The engine loves the cool temps as far as the power goes. But fuel mileage is suffering. Still waiting for our first snow. The rear turbo box has been keeping the rear window defrosted nicely and works great as a secondary heat source.
