The take-home message is: avoid the brake pedal. Parking is one time you may have the option of rolling to a complete stop because there's no set 'stop line' if you have flexibility on which spot you can choose.
if you come upon your parking spot and have enough momentum to roll around for a while you have already wasted the fuel....you cant get it back by rolling around....best bet is to do a better job of planning out your parking and have just enough momentum to roll into your spot. so braking here would be the best option for damage control and then for next time review your coasting point and adjust it so you can get it right on next time!

I just love trying to melt ice off the glass at -20 with the A/C on. As if fuel consumption isn't bad enough in a cold car. I wonder if it makes sense to remove the A/C relay for the duration of the (Canadian) winter.
i believe it does that because the a/c acts as a dehumidifier and actually helps remove the moisture from the window.....

Absolutely true! As has been mentioned though (I think), this tip is more of a numbers game.

EG: my indicated MPG will be higher than yours if I continue coasting to a stop, but you brake to a stop in the nearest parking space that suits you.

Banks would refer to this as "pre-drafting", wherein one would spend money they weren't yet entitled to, then cover it up with a deposit in the same business day that wouldn't be valid until the next business day, often 3 calendar days later.

At least that's what it reminds me of. Either way, it's not really helping anything in the long run.

No argument here. It's a shell game.

Doesn't change the fact that given the choice, if I overcook things I'll coast & take the higher numbers, then try to be more accurate next time.

Lol. I just stop. 3 seconds extra to get into and out of wherever I'm going, and chances are, the engine was off long before I got to my parking lane anyway.

what about adding a header, cat back exhaust, cai, sri, upgraded air filter, es motor mounts(or full master kit), short shifters, free flow mufflers?

As far as the parking is concerned, the extended glide may help your mpg ratio for that trip; however on the way back it will create extra ground to cover. If less gas is the goal, then the answer is clear.

Nope, not going to help.

Why are we talking about mods in the driving technique thread?

Aha - but the tip suggests "orbiting" a parking area. So the landing spot isn't necessarily any further away.

This tip sure gets people commenting. I need to put an asterisk beside it:
Quote:
* "This tip is mostly useless, but also mostly harmless. It doesn't actually save fuel. It's a band-aid that only serves to slightly goose your MPG numbers in those rare cases where you overcook it and come into a parking situation with too much momentum. Next time, pay attention, bonehead, and don't use more fuel than you have to in the first place. ."
