I also forgot to add oil and do an after compression test to see if it is the rings. I assume it is. I'll do that tonight probably.

I've got a spare 1.0 if you want to fix it up while you're still driving the car. Come and get it!

(ForkenSwift's ICE. Ran when pulled.)

I'm pretty sure the engine is different enough where that won't work since the 99 is OBDII. I know the ignition is different (electronic vs vacuum advance).

.

Was that 130 psi warm or cold ?

Were all the plugs removed before testing to allow the starter to spin the engine fast enough ?

Do you have access to another compression tester to see if it gives similar results ?

You may want to try and find someone with a leak down tester to pin point where the loss is coming from. They're also able to give you the percentage of loss. Something a compression tester can't do.

If you can't find a leak down tester, try this.

Spin the engine to TDC on the cyl. you want to check. Remove the hose from your compression tester and connect it to your air compressor hose.
Charge the cyl. with compressed air. Listen for air leaks coming from the intake manifold, exhaust pipe and oil fill cap. Where you hear the air coming from will tell you what the problem is. You may have to have someone help to hold the engine at TDC. When it is at exactly at TDC it is very easy to hold.

130 psi is not that horrible.

Not good... Not bad... In my opinion.

If the engine runs fine and doesn't burn oil, I wouldn't worry about it.

It will probably go another 50,000 miles.

It was warm. I did it as soon as I got home from work.

All the plugs were out, the throttle was at WOT while cranking.

I don't have access to another compression tester, but I've used this one many times.

I'm sure it'll keep kicking for a while. I'm in no hurry, but I would like to get it fixed. As it turns out, the parts for a re-ring rebuild are pretty cheap.

Some reading on geometroforum says it could just be burnt valves.

Metro 3 bangers interchange, the long blocks are all the same-89-2000. Just use your manifolds, oil pump, pan, accessories and ignition.

Is your cam timing correct? Being off a tooth will throw off the compression.

I suppose that would be a good thing to check before tearing things apart! I do know the timing belt was done before I got the car.

I did another compression check last night. The first round was dry, all were still right at 130 psi. Then I added oil. They all came up to about 150 psi, but would go a bit higher if I cranked longer. Thats not a good sign.

This is still not completely conclusive if the timing is off I think. So, I'll be checking that tonight.

Any news? Timing belt off a notch would be ideal.
