I'd like to see how fuel for transportation fits into my overall use of energy, however obtained. And associated costs. While I distinctly enjoy finding the groove before turning the engine key and then being able to glide through the city, or out on the road, this calendar year will be with a different occupation, residence (mobile) and relation to transportation as whole. More dependent, in some respects. But with lower overall energy usage once settled into a place for a term of work. New trade-off's in other words.
As to fuel, specifically, the establishment of Team Cummins caused me to ratchet up the tension. An Ultragauge or similar is needed for me to monitor more closely what works, and what doesn't. First calendar year fill-up is approaching. I'm thinking 2012 will be, therefore, a year of data collection and some experimentation to chart future years against. A fair amount of investment in both wheels and house, as well.

Well, I didn't meet my goal of 28mpg for the year. My avg. mileage actually dropped a little (27.7 in 2010 to 27.2 in 2011) I wasn't terribly surprised though. I had a little higher percentage of city driving and my wife (definitely not a hypermiler) has been driving the car more. On the upside, though, we drove fewer miles this year (5113mi) and only used 188.1gal of gas. at least I can brag that I reduced my carbon footprint even if my mileage dropped We hit the highway less than 20 days last year and that was over half of our annual mileage. The rest of the year was short tripping around town. I think this year I need to learn to bike more.

You might be on to something--that would explain both his mileage and his weight. That's quite the exercise program.

dealing with my motobike- i have increased my fuel mileage from mid 70's to 87mpg measured in Nov.(seems cold weather is not helping mpg) . i believe front gear and windsheild and (a little) responsible driving. loving riding the bike and saving gas. for 2012 i will regear the rear sprockets, front fender (may have to make it),new front windsheild, some behind the rider aerodynamics (spell check also). could look at my '99 f150.

2010 : 5.23 l/100km or 44.97 mpg for 30,262 km and 1,582 L
(I joined ecomodder in July 2010)
2011 : 4.70 l/100km or 50.05 mpg for 23,664 km and 1,113 L
Goal for 2012 : at least maintain status quo with 2011 despite the ongoing engine / DPF troubles; try to do less kilometers.
My original goal of 4.2 L/100km - 56mpg seems far off without some hardcore modding.
If my own car had been as good as Snert, the replacement Volvo S40 I had for a few weeks, it'd have been possible (see fuel log).
That loaner car looked to be in a worse shape, but it was mechanically better than mine.

Our Pale one has probably spent too much time near Wayne Gerdes
My introduction to hypermiling came with a Discovery repo on hypermilers, featuring Wayne pushing his car off his driveway.
Back then, I though that was a bit extreme.
Now I'm pushing my car back or forth when it's not properly parked within the lines of the parking lot.

Cheers, guys.
I choose my parking spaces wisely, so I don't have to push the car.
Wayne? Yep. I've more than once been on the receiving end of his "drill sergeant" driving instruction. And no, I didn't do everything exactly as he instructed. I can filter things and think for myself.
