Just got a text from Jethro. Bad news. He said that his clutch was starting to slip and his rear brakes were fading or gone. He is in Eastern Nebraska. He is headed back east.

Keep an eye open for him.

Well, if you can reach him let him know i might have a clutch laying around that he can have. I can check when I get home and mail it if that's the case. Don't want to see this awesome effort go down the drain.

That's too bad, he mentioned had had put completely new rear brakes on, but didn't trust them. I would think the clutch was new too. I wonder if the rear brakes were dragging and that's why his coast down test was so bad.

That's no good... I hate to see Ken throw in the towel at this point.

I just talked to him for a few minutes, the clutch started slipping on some of the hills, so he's been babying it ever since.

He appreciates everyone's support and well wishes, but unfortunately has turned around and is headed for home by way of I-80 through Iowa.

Tony, most observant. My Jetta makes some groaning noises in the rear axle area when rolling cold. I bought the car from Rick Gritters, he mentioned that he thought the rear brakes were dragging and gave me a new master cylinder. I think the world of Rick. Probably I should change it huh. Maybe it is a problem of sorts for the Mk 2.

Ken, what do you think. Your mileage is a bit down from when you first dieseled your car.

Thank you everyone for your support and well wishes( as metromizer said). The salt was only part of the trip, and the only regret I have is not getting to meet everyone that I would have met. I've already had the best adventure that I can remember. None of what has happened so far would have happened at all if not for this forum.

Even though I'm in a rest stop beside the road wearing my second last set of clean clothes, I'm still smiling. Maybe I can beg TangoCharlie to let me borrow his washing machine tomorrow night. I'm only about 450 miles from his place.

Internet is slow here and I might be on and off.

Terry- can you text me about stopping tomorrow night. No is an OK option. Low on minutes on the trac phone and texting is cheap.

Varn- I had to take off the pink "race car" tape as this year is a bust.

Many thanks to all.
