This is why we have engineers and laws.
Looks like no attempt at weld prep was made and welds look like bird poop and will hold as if they were bird poop.
Anyone who says they can weld through paint is a dangerous idiot.
That harbor freight trailer was only made to hold around 1,100lb, that house has to weigh at least a ton.
At the very last the tires will shred at highway speed.

First, that's not a roof overhang, it's a Kammback.
The structure at the bottom is probably because the trailer has very low metal sides.

I love the projects, but how much weight is an HF trailer rated for? Yes, weld it all up, but the axle? I also wouldn't trust much tongue weight to one of those clamp-on nose wheels.

OTOH, those 2x4 stud walls are overengineered for the gross dimensions. A stressed skin monocoque with round-cornered rectangular opening would be some fraction of the weight.

You are correct about the welding. Don't take it on the Interstate!

I got the heaviestduty one they had and was able to destroy it in less than 2 years and I never put anything as heavy as a house on it. All I had to do to fix it was put bigger stronger tires on it, stronger axle, stronger springs, convert it to fully welded construction. Basically had to completely rebuild it to make it to where it could carry 2,500lb.
Then any time I would load it any where near a ton it was scarry so I added a brake axle a few years ago.

Overengineered, shmoverengineered! 2x4s are the backbone of any DIY project. They're not putting the trailer into production, they're knocking something together in their backyard.

That brings us back to Post #42: Dimensional lumber is universal application. Your budding trailer designer can drop $100 at Lowes Depot, go home, and then figure out what he's going to make as he goes along.

Yeah, an HF trailer is kind of like the Krikkit One: "...a very useful thing to have around if you suddenly decided to build a spaceship yourself and didnít know how to do it. It was not, however, anything that would ever fly anywhere itself."

Here's an oldy but a goody:


Only I'd use Superbeetle McPherson struts instead of a leaf-spring axle. So the wheels and tire match the tow vehicle.

The metal corner brackets on Xist's example are a good feature.

What would cost more, hiring a welder, or buying a welder?

I have zero experience, so...

I also have zero plans to move this, I just want a quiet place to work!

2x4s may be overkill, but what I am supposed to use in order to have siding, good insulation, and drywall?!

Let me guess, don't use siding or drywall, use coroplast!
