I wonder if employees at Pilgrim are giving 100% effort/attention despite knowing their job is being eliminated.

Yeah looks like they are replacing base load normally taken care of by coal and nuclear with intermittent generation sources.

Heat Records
Most of the major television networks have been talking about Memorial Day weekend heat records being broken across parts of the S-E United States.
Perhaps that will help those trying to dry out from the recent record flooding.

Widespread Business Decommissioning
There will be widespread office building closures across the continental United States, according to the U.S. Chamber of Horrors.
Due to their intermittent GDP,with many company business operations curtailed for up to 16-hours a day, they've become an embarrassment to capitalists.
A spokesperson for Profits before God,said that the capital outlay and materials expense, compared to returns, has made these enterprises nonviable. They want to cull any operation which does not perform 24-7-365,and expect uninterrupted currency flow.
Financiers, developers, architects, construction companies, and permitting agencies, have submitted written apologies for their economy-wrecking waste.
U.N.peacekeeping forces will monitor the decommissioning process for an orderly
transition.
A Congressional delegation from Texas is sponsoring business-efficiency legislation, conceived at Texas A&M University, which will add two more hours to the day.

Doom-o-oil Theory
While the Domino Theory didn't play out like many feared, not so for the Doom-o-oil Theory.
Without double-blind,randomized,placebo-controlled,large-cohort clinical trials,to prove the efficacy and safety of internal combustion, before it was ever allowed on the market;we've allowed pusher men to sell this drug, openly,on street corners across the country for a century.
And we've known since the 1950s that it's use is a potential killer. Not to mention the millions who've already died, trying to keep America and the rest of the developed-world supplied with intoxicating tailpipe fumes.
Perhaps Eisenhower should have paid equal attention to the Oxidation Industrial Complex.
The OxyContin and Sackler Family fiasco is gonna look like a walk in the park compared to oxidation. With culpability all the way to the White House for 5-decades.A real success story!

Except, as I keep pointing out, humanity has greatly benefited from burning fossil fuels in nearly every measurable way, including health and longevity of life.
Nobody is culpable if everyone is culpable.

It will be enforced by Homeland Security, Internal Revenue Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, ect. Which have all been transformed into a militarised private security force for the politicians in order to put down with force the next "Occupy Wall Street" revolt or food riot.

They don't all shut down at once, when they are sited correctly. They can be shut down one by one, for maintenance.

It was a facetious comment to point out that a handful of shutdowns in a year is nothing compared to the variability of wind.

Pilgrim nuclear power plant will be shut down May 31st. For good.
History timeline of Pilgrim:
https://www.wbur.org/earthwhile/2019...-plant-history
What we have learned from Pilgrim: the promise of "too cheap to meter" was a ridiculous lie. Nuclear power cost a LOT to run - and we have to keep paying for AT LEAST another 60 years - and probably for thousands of years. Decommissioning is a big unknown - and the long term SAFE storage of the nuclear waste - is probably going to cost far more than the energy we got.
Nuclear power is far from predictable, and is quite prone to emergency shutdowns. It also has a lot of predictable and required shutdowns, for refueling and regular maintenance. So, as a baseline generator, nuclear power has a lot of significant problems.
