There is a way: pitot tube

Seriously, once upon a time one of the grand-daddy hypermilers (Dan K) installed a pitot tube/airspeed indicator in his Civic VX so he could tell when he was benefitting from a distant draft.

Of course, instant MPG on your digital display is another way to tell.

Argh, my first ever fillup. Not complete fillup, but put about 9 gallons into the tank. Went 200 miles ish :/ Don't know exactly how much gas the previous owner left in the tank, I suspect I used 8 gallons. Spent 3 hours trying to get better with starts and teaching my brother, which probably burned at least 1 gallon.

I have an older 1ZZ, which burns a bit of oil and has very old O2 sensors which I suspect are not reading that correctly (it barely passed smog with the maximum allowed ppm measured, and the exhaust has a strong unburned fuel smell to it), but no excuse for my poor mpgs. With a 2195 lb curb weight and a 5th gear that works great at just over 25mph, there's no excuse for doing poorly.

Plus you've got to fill it right up! It's the only way to know your true fuel consumption.

505.7 miles on 10.61 gallons in my 2011 Fiesta. One of my better tanks of E10, 47.66 MPG. A short trip in the country on 55 MPH roads helped a lot. Gauge showed 53 miles to empty, my highest distance tank since I bought the car.

Ah heh sorry I filled it to the top, what I meant was the tank wasn't close to empty.

I'm pretty disappointed with my gas mileage so far, don't have a parking permit yet because my apartment manager is f***ing slow at getting me a copy of my lease so I'm just parking it 5 times a day. The engine is usually still cold by the time I park it, the idle is about 700rpm when warmed up, when I move the car it's only dropped to maybe 900-1000. Odometer shows about 20 miles since 3 days ago (yea, parking is quite hard to find around Berkeley!), and I see the needle dropping past the "F" mark already

Old Mech: impressive. Congrats.

serial: Aha - I misunderstood.

If your O2 sensor(s) are that bad, I'm surprised you don't have a check engine light (CEL). However, I once had a vacuum leak that caused an extremely rich mixture (even had soot in the tailpipe) and no CEL, and my Firefly's mileage dropped into the 20's from 50's.

That sounds frightening.
The car did pass smog, so I'm guessing it's not too horrible, but only very rarely do I encounter a car that smells worse than my car.

I don't have motivation to change anything because I don't drive much. Otherwise I would've already gotten a C60 transmission for this 5 gears is just not acceptable, especially this 3000rpm <60mph nonsense. The speedometer tells me 3000rpm = 60mph but the radar electronic speed display things tell me I'm actually going 10% slower than indicated. The engine makes such a racket that I just don't really want to drive over 50mph lol. 60mph on the freeway is just death to the ears.

Next time the tires are changed, I think I might try to increase the diameter so that at least I'm going the speed my speedometer says, not under.

Now that's just awesome. Where do I get one that's sensitive below 70mph?

Some googling gave me this:

Hall Brothers Manufacturing Co. | Wind Measurement

Attach a tube to the opening and route along side mirror?
