had to fill up today, I was going to get a new switch and was 1/2 mile from the gas station when I pulsed and the engine started stuttering. I was able to cost through a light and roll to a stop right at the pump

tank was 1005.1 miles at 75.57 MPG!!!!!

now I need a new goal!

I am unsure if I could get to 100 MPG, it would be nice but it might take till next summer.

I got to thinking, If I get some more material, I could make some front skirts. ~1 MPG

I also could rework the front belly pan (hangs a bit low right now). ~.5 MPG

I also could make a pan for the center section (OEM is smooth and devoid of mounting points) ~.5 MPG

side skirts? ~.5MPG

delete Power steering (its off 75% of the time now with all my P&G) ~1MPG

Those might get me 3 MPG better. does that sound about right or am i low balling it?
any thing else to mod for better MPG?

I think 100 MPG is a bit high of a goal, I have never had a trip over 79 MPG yet so I am unsure how to boost the MPG much more. 1100 miles would need ~82 MPG and I am not sure I have that much left. there is only so much I can do with a 1.8L engine that does not have lean burn

If I did add some sort of regen breaking I might get to 85 MPG as I would make my worst part of the trip into the same as the rest. it would also help the odd short trip better. not sure if the payback will ever make up the cost though. anyone have a "trial" system available for use

As your mileage gets higher it's going to be harder to improve.

I would say 100mpg is perhaps a bit lofty of a goal, but with a 75mpg tank maybe 85 would be a good one to shoot for. You might need an engine swap and roof chop to get 100!

If I were you I'd rebuild the boat tail with some generous radii to reduce pressure differentials that form vortexes. Could you radius it enough that the rear end looks like an oval (airplane fuselage)? Something like 3-Wheeler did, but glass the outside, and use that as a mold for the final piece. That way it won't be so heavy. Might get you 3-5mpg or so depending on its current performance?

Also, gap sealers at the seam between the car and boat tail. LRR tires. Maybe some weight reduction- racing wheels, carbon hood, lexan rear windows. Not sure if any companies actually make Matrix racing parts.

Yikes. $400

On my MPG front, I am really wanting a pitot tube (one that looks vaguely aerospace-like if possible). Driving the Rabbit yesterday I found a sweet spot to the rear side of a box truck; it felt like there was no wind at all! Having a means of determining wind speed in the aeromodded car could pay dividends.

I think the 5 MPG I am getting from my tail is ~95% of what a perfect one can get so the payback to change it is never.

Did you see my stickers? they are designed for looks AND for function, they cover the whole seam of car-tail. no leaks and better air flow

LRR tires we done back in July, +5 MPG from them.

With all the P&G I do, weight loss is a net 0 game.

Just pulse and glided for the first time for about 30 miles since it was pretty late and roads didn't have too many people. When a pack of cars came though I just left it in gear to not piss people off. Did 50mph-60mph. Unfortunately my glides were not as long as I hoped because my car is really light and not the most aerodynamic, but at least it glides along pretty well at low speed despite its summer performance rubber.

No numbers, don't have my Torque app calibrated correctly yet...need to see the next fillup to get an idea of how accurate it is. It's telling me I'm getting like 40mpg average which seems way off since the tank is being drained much faster than that.

Angry

I broke my streak. 10 tanks in a row over 500 miles, and this morning I filled up at just under 498.

Lately on my regular commute from my friend's house to my house I have kicked some serious ass!

It is a 6.7 Km (4.2 miles) commute. There is 10 stop signs and 10 traffic lights. I used extreme EOC to achieve this.

From the data on my SGII, I took 0.17 Liters (0.044 Gallons (US)) giving an astronomous 2.57 LHK (91.52 MPG (US / 38.91 KPL)

EPA : 30 MPG city / 38 MPG highway / 33 MPG combined. So I got : 61,52 MPG more than my city EPA (203,3% Above City EPA) and 58,52 MPG more than my combined EPA (175,7% Above Combined EPA).

This is my best A-B trip mileage, got one red light and the engine was not so hot, so it could be better I think.
But this is some serious stuff.

EDIT : I got even better, 2.24 LHK (105,01 MPG (US) / 44.64 KPL) More details here : Echo-Troll Modding Thread (2005 Toyota Echo)

I know i dont have a very good write-up
no lean-burn? no good gear ratio? p&g is the answer
MPG=1 TIME=0
