I need to keep better track of this thread, I just caught up and the whole time you were talking about knock I was thinking "you are pulling in too hot of air" lol.

Cover the grill back up and let the engine ride at 200* like you were before but figure out a spot to pull in cooler air. The engine running hotter is good for MPG and not bad for parts at that temp, just need it to stop causing the intake to pull in such hot air.

Yep, it was near 200*F air Wednesday!

I'm in a Catch 22 here. I need hot air to help with lean burn. I tried lean burning with the CAI (pulling in 66*F air) and the car was freaking out! Lean almost requires hot air. The grill block is need for warm-up and aero benefits, but there is a super fine line between too much and too little on the ZX2. It's either running 185-190*F coolant temps or bouncing between 207-225*F!

The only way around this is to have fully adjustable grill and intake.

I just plugged my knock sensor back in, so we will see how everything works now

About time!

Lookee what got installed at the end of last week. The wideband is in and it is working very well!

The exhaust shop put the WBO2 in the catalytic converter before the brick. They had it in very quickly, and allowed me to stay in the shop and watch them install it. It had to be installed at a certain place and at an angle greater than, or equal to, 10 degrees. They listened to me and asked me several times to check the work to make 100% sure it was right.

If you are ever around Benson/McGee's Crossroads in NC and need exhaust work, stop on by - REH Automotive

The above AFRs are during lean cruise. It turns out that the I was running dangerously lean at times! The gauge would shoot to 20:1 and start flashing which means the gauge sensed AFRs over 20:1 for more than 3 seconds. Yikes!

It took some tuning with the touchy penitometer, but it now will go straight to 16.5-17.3 AFRs with the flip of the switch and stay there till the PCM freaks

When the PCM "freaks", it goes into open loop and the AFRs go waayyy past 20:1. This causes an incredible loss in power, surging and shaking. To get back into closed loop, the box is switched off and the car goes into Neutral for a 3-6 second coast. Then it is back in gear and lean burn is back for another few minutes!

Also, I left lean burn accidentally while coasting to a stop sign yesterday. What surprised me was the AFRs were 10:1 and flashing! Super rich! Who would have thought that a modified MAF signal a idle would cause a super rich condition??

Finally j/k

Cool now you find out real fast how much information one little gauge can give you. Take my advice and right down everything that seems strange and when and what did it do to the instant FE. You will compile a ton of notes that you can review later when your not driving.

I know, chill bud

I'm literally drowning in all the information I am compiling since installing the WBO2. There little nuances that I felt, but now have the data behind it. It makes driving very fun!

The only thing is that I don't like is that I can't see the real effects of going lean. Since I started lean burn, I have had to increase the fuel offset on my SGII from 24.3% all the way to 73%! This throws off the numbers when I am not in LB, but gets them close when I am in LB. The SGII does not even use AFR to figure out MPG!

I could really use that MPGuino to get better numbers... and a spare intake cam! Ty, you reading this?! ...

I've been researching Wayne Gerdes recently... Wow. I am nowhere as close to an extreme hypermiler as I thought. He has inspired me to try harder and explore unused tactics. It is paying off, as I got 54.3 mpg and 56.0 mpg traveling to the fiance's yesterday and back home. This is without the 2 mile EOC that I had when I lived at my mama's, and the weather is much cooler now. Maybe I can keep the 90-day average around 50 mpg this winter after all?

My mpgs might improve this winter if I keep trying as hard as Wayne did!

The ZX2 was damaged tonight in a collision with a deer. Pics and details to come later today.

Hope you were unhurt and curious to what, specifically, you learned from Wayne that was helpful. Maybe the ZX2 is not totally lost?
