That would be the best thing to do instead of taking an immediately-passional decision, altough I'd bet the 1.0L Ecoboost provides better mileage than the 1.6L non-turbo in real-world scenario. Anyway, what I like more in a turbocharged vehicle is that it's less sensitive to power decreasement in higher altitudes.

In the New York TImes technology section this morning: "Ford engineers say ... the EcoBoost engine produces 90 percent of its maximum torque at a relatively low 1,500 r.p.m."
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/au...r.html?hp&_r=0
The article itself needed more editing. It confuses what has already been released in Europe with what will be and is not clear about the US market. But that one line (above) seemed to make the piece worth it. Nice hypermiling car. The 1.0L with a manual trans in a Fiesta here in the USA will be an MPG champ.

at first glance, I though that was a scaled down version of the 3 cyl block. At closer look it is the actual size, 52 lb 3 cyl block that fits in a suit case. No cherry picker required for that swap. lol

Okay, so it looks like I missed the part about the 6spd MT coming with the 1.0L ecoboost. The car mags have been saying that the 3 banger will see the US in a Focus too so it's tough to say what's true or not. Nothing confirmed for the US near as I can tell.

That's the biggest plus to me - the low end torque. Here in the hills, you have to wind the little 4s up to get up hills (even if you want to give up some speed).
Driving my 2.0 5 speed '11 Focus on some hilly main roads, I had to keep it at around 3,000 RPM to even hold 35 on some of these hills (speed limit is 55). Driving my parents 2.0 EB Escape, it had no problem pulling the hills at 2000RPM in 5th or 6th gear.
I like the smaller turbo engines for the numbers they put out. I'm not entirely sold on their reliability.

In Europe, it's gonna be available even in the Mondeo hatchback. Regarding the US-spec Focus, altough there is no technical reason against the 1.0L Ecoboost to become available for the Focus, I still can see some cultural barriers...

As the lingering effects of the great recession continue, studies are showing US drivers are hanging onto older cars longer and buying more used cars if they need greater efficiency or a new ride. I can't help but think that the new line of 40+ mpg cars hitting the showrooms from several makers is a response to that fact as well as the gasoline prices and CAFE standards. They need some way to lure people into a new car, so they take more aggressive steps to reduce cost of ownership.
As soon as these 1.0L turbo engines reach the USA, I'll be in a showroom. I can't resist at least looking.

Has there been any update on when it's coming here? A guy at the local Ford dealer said *maybe* in the Spring of 2014...though I admit he was likely trying to pressure me into making a quick purchase of something else.

I'm not opposed to it personally. The base engine in the US is a 2.0L and it's had a 2.0L since 2005 when they offered the pseudo ST w/ a 2.3L. Three engines is going to be more than enough for the US market. Those three being the base N/A 2.0L, ST with 2.0L ecoboost, and the SFE with the 1.6L ecoboost.
Maybe they will offer the 1.0L as the new base engine in the 2014 Focus? I'm more interested in whether the Focus will get the 6spd manual across the lineup. It's been a long time coming.

Back here in Brazil the base engine for the Focus is a naturally-aspirated 1.6L. In spite of the 1.0L Ecoboost having its advantage, the 3-cylinder layout and the lower displacement would be considered a povertry-feature. 1.0L cars are set into a slightly lower tax class back here.
