Someone is still getting screwed on them. My hyper eco-conscious neighbor bought one about 6 months ago; yesterday she was here in her old ICE vehicle. Leaf has next to no range left in the battery and it is not economically feasible for her to replace it. As electric vehicles age and proliferate, and used car dealers continue to do used car dealer sorts of things, I expect this will become a recurring theme.

I wonder if something like GoFundMe might help there. "I was trying to save the world, but I got scammed! Please help me fix my car!"

Couldn't hurt...

Not economically feasible?

A brand new 24 kWh replacement Leaf battery is $5500 and comes with a 5 year / 60,000 mile warranty. That is 9 cents per mile assuming the battery dies at the end of the warranty (which is very unlikely)

Nissan provides up to 60 months financing on the replacement batteries.

Look at it as prepaying for 5 years of gas in an ICE car.

I spent around $6,000 on my 8L high compression big block Chevy engine for my suburban. But I'm expecting this engine to go 100,000 miles and last 15 to 20 years and produce around 450 horsepower and 500 to 550 ft.lb. of torque.

I have seen doorman "reconditioned" leaf batteries for around $2,200. I don't know how much range they give you.
From what I have seen I should be able to install the battery my self. Looks about as fun as pulling and installing a full gas tank.

On InsightCentral the consensus is that Doorman new or refurbished packs for the first gen Insight are not on a par with BumbleBee or other vendors. So take care.

I have not found any reviews on the doorman pack.
I figured that you get what you pay for.
Want more miles, pay more dollars.
The one I bought got a new nissan pack in 2014 and it's been up north in a much cooler climate since it's had the new pack.

That engine may well last 100,000 miles (it should last more than that) but you will also burn about $25,000 dollars of fuel to go those 100K miles. For an EV, the battery is pretty much the only consumable and you buy it upfront.

In April 2018, Nissan started offering factor reconditioned batteries for $2850. The only catch is right now they are only sold in Japan. Time will tell if they expand the program to the USA.

The leaf can't tow my 26 foot long tandem deck over trailer.

I am actually expecting the 8L to get a lot better than 10mpg. I was getting 12 to 13 mpg in town and 16 on the highway with a 3 speed auto, 4.10 gears and lean burn on the old 7.4L. I was able to pretty much mach the mpg of a new suburban.
I have 3.23 gears for it and I would like to put a six speed manual behind it.

Looks like I have a set of LRR tires for it.
The VW and leaf take the exact same size tires.
Since the guy selling the leaf didn't put "new tires" or "tires at 50%" in the description I'm thinking that the tires weren't much of a selling point, it may need tires soon.
