Very interesting the project but...
- there was a honda civic coupe (and a sedan version) by far more aerodynamic than the hatchback.
- honda civic crash safety before 2001 (under 4 euroncap stars Honda Civic | Euro NCAP - For safer cars crash test safety rating) seems to me like not the best choice for a every day or a track car (without rollcage, etc.).

I drove the car Honda Civic Coupe Lsi 125 cv and it was a missile and very cheap to fill up and use every day doing 40.000 kms a year (24.000 milles/year). I remember to have better milleage than most of the diesels with that power. And it was one of the car shapes i liked most, but i think that safety is a very big issue. So in my family we sold the 96 Honda Civic Coupe, the 97 Honda CRV, the 97 Honda Prelude, the 97 Honda Accord (5th gen, European Model) althought they were full equiped, reliable, pretty, sporty to drive and better fuel economy. But it sounds crazy driving anything without 5 stars Euroncap, ESP, lots of airbags, (4 stars if second hand).

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.

"You must be," said the Cat, "otherwise you wouldn't have come here."

Alice didn't think that proved it at all: however she went on. "And how do you know that you're mad?"

"To begin with," said the Cat, "I spend all my time and money to modify a car to save on gas"

"I suppose so," said Alice

What was most satisfying to everyone was that the Ecorun Civic met the projected goal of 60 mpg on the flat highways, and 50-55 mpg on mountainous terrain [...]
That sounds good, but it doesn't sound great. And it neatly avoids mentioning what their total tankful MPGs were.

I'd like to see a comparison of the costs incurred vs. the savings, but I doubt we ever will; the objective was to sell stuff after all. And I guess we'll have to wait for the magazine's followup article to find out if they employed any hypermiling techniques.

How do people live in such fear? I'd much rather be seen as a madman.

About the article, maybe a few Civic drivers from here should post comments on the ricer site how they manage better mpg without ridiculously costly mods?

"Safety" is one of those "third rail" topics around here (and other sites probably) that generates more heat than light. Best left alone.

It's not fear. It's physics. Momentum and kinetics energy.
And you only need some tenths of second to drastically realize that your own madness killed you, because you spend 3000$ in aftermarket parts instead of a second hand car capable of crash at normal speeds and keep you alive or with a low level of injuries.

90's Honda area kind of classic modern cars for me, but they are not my option to commute or drive long trips.

Same topic was brought up in my 68 rambler build thread. I was brought up as an antique automobile enthusiast so I understand the risks involved but I do it anyway because I love it. Motorcycle drivers take an even larger risk but they still do it because they love it.
