More like a rising spiral?
A few years back I was thinking about places I could move to; and (pre-Fukushima) Bellingham, WA was high on the list.

Campus facilities include an electronic music studio, an air pollution lab, a motor vehicle research lab, a marine research lab, a wind tunnel, an electron microscope, and a neutron generator lab.[13] Western's Vehicle Research Institute has led Automobile Magazine to describe Western as "very possibly the best school in the country for total car design."[citation needed]

I figured I'd hang out in the bars that the students frequent and pick their brains. Or is it pique their brains

Looks like the Viking-II (red car) and many of the others which followed were not afraid to let some air under the car. I suspect they were using the upside down wing body as a concept, but don't see anything in the text to support that theory.
A few more pictures, I was seeking out more Viking-40 images.

FYI, there's an SAE paper, 951904, about Viking 23. It says the CD is a coastdown derived 0.275. Their scale model suggested a CD of 0.19. Frontal area is 1.4177 meters. No mention of the windshield source...
There are some other SAE papers about some of the other cars...still reading....
