Just looked up the rules in the UK. I had heard from someone who mods cars (for racing) at work that the rule is based on distance from the edges, but that isn't the case - there is a minimum width between them instead, and a min/max height :

This distance may be reduced to 400 mm where the overall width of the vehicle is less than 1,300 mm.
6.19.4.2. In height: above the ground not less than 250 mm nor more than 1,500 mm.
6.19.4.3. In length: at the front of the vehicle. This requirement shall be deemed to be satisfied if the light emitted does not cause discomfort to the driver either directly, or indirectly through the devices for indirect vision and/or other reflecting surfaces of the vehicle.
6.19.5. Geometric visibility
Horizontal: outwards 20° and inwards 20°.
Vertical: upwards 10° and downwards 10°.
6.19.6. Orientation
Towards the front.
George is 1615mm not including mirrors so the 600 mm min width between the lights rule would apply. The centre grill is 800 mm at the top and 750 mm at the bottom. So my thought is to put them here :

Looks good I'm not sure, but while driving I may have seen a bug with DRLs placed like that. I know I've seen one or two with the DRLs installed horizontally at the top of the grille where it's wider (like in my P307). If I see one in the nearest future then I'll try to get a pic for you.

I'd have thought more like this?

gets round the front bumper issue, and gives you a stylish and practical partial upper grille block

I removed the upper nostril block a while ago when it came loose - must "borrow" some more black zip ties from work and refit them. That would be a better option as you can get behind there more easily, but the upper nostrils are only just 600mm apart at the outer edges, George is too broad in the beam to qualify for the 400mm rule.

We don't want any problems with the fuzz...

...tapping of which time to wander over to a thread about a 318

I need to work out which DRLs will fit into the grill. I may fit them horizontally as you have them but in the same space I have them like PWs. The lower grill is blocked on the right (from the driver's seat looking forward) and the opening on the left is obscured by the radiator from the inside.

I also need to work out which is a decent kit and what other parts I might need. And whether I feel brave enough on electrickery. I want it to be proper, i.e. on with ignition and off with sidelights or headlights.

Any ideas on what is a decent kit, or a decent set on bay of flea and what else I might need ? Halfrauds has the Lyra kit which apparently includes everything you need, but they want £70 for it, ebay has it at about £40 but loads of lights being sold for less - often its hard to work out if they are all legal or not.

My DRLs are wired to the cabin's accessory (lighter) socket, since it turns on and off with the key in ignition position. The other half is done with a relay which switches off when the headlights turn on (you can wire it to position lights, if you prefer). Not too hard to DIY, and much cheaper than £40.

Thanks, thats a plan!

I think there is some marking I need to have on the lights for them to be legal in the EC, is that correct ?

I'd put them in the black oval shapes intended for the missing foglights - make the DLRs really mark the corners of the car.

Decent kit usually doesn't come very cheap.

Two things:
  • Running lights RL,
  • Homologation for any EU country, for example E2 is France.
Using the fog light holes is also a good idea.

The only issue there would be possibly the police thinking they WERE foglights?

@arra,sorry, I misread your measurements to say the upper grill was wide enough

I reckon your placement is cos you secretly lust after one of them horrific 'anti retro' chariots

The foglight blanks are my original plan - I could buy some spare ones and fit the lights to those and then swap them over - Mercs have them close to the fogs anyway. That also has the advantage of not needing to get behind the lower grill which is mostly blocked. I'll see if I can find some spares.
