Some cars use dimmed highbeams as DRLs. You might try that if you don't want to buy/install anything. Will probably use slightly more power than the LED variety, but much less than headlights + position + tag + dash lights.

Having a seperate setup appeals for simplicity (for my weak skills on electrickery anyway ) plus the light sets are very cheap including correctly marked ones. It looks like it could be done for <£20 all in which is more affordable. I will go with mounting them in the equivalent position you have yours

Or if they are short enough then in my vertical position - DS3 anyone I checked with a Toyota dealer as they fit foglights if people ask for them with new cars, but they toss the removed covers into the boot of the car rather than keeping them.

OK - I have a diagram on how to wire it using a 5 point relay - is this correct ?

The idea will be they go on with the ignition and off with the sidelights - I've checked and the sidelights (position lights) stay on with the dipped and main beam. There is an ACC (accessory) wire in the underbonnet fusebox - Haynes manuals - thank you...

EDIT - ignore the connection between pin 30 and 87a - I copied this from a diagram...

Lucky! I had to run a wire from the cabin. But that allowed me to control them with a 3-position switch in case I wanted to override them (AUTO-OFF-ON).

Ooh I like that - thats an idea.

Couple of questions - whats amps do I need to fuse for - would 5 be ok ? I think the DRLs draw only a little.

These are the lights that are in a Van on their way to me.

this will work, but...

you can do this with a simple kfz relais too. the gnd 85 goes to the same power sorce as the drl does. and drl changes to the 87.

the sidelight contact has nearly gnd, when sidelights are off, and 12v, if sidelights are on. this way a closer relais drives the drl and not a opener. and wiring is little esayer too.

Sounds interesting - could you do me a quick picture like one above please, just so I can imagine it in my head ?

Mine are 5.5W each, so both (11W) draw less than 1A. I don't have them on a separate fuse since they are wired to the cabin's accessory socket, which already has its own fuse. This reduces the max power draw of any accessories by 1A, but I'm not going to waste energy anyway.
