I believe that technically their settlement check buys the car from you, and you can buy it back for the residual amount.

Sure, but you'd be unable to use it regularly even after repairing the damage

I don't know what it's like to put a "write off" back on the road where you are. But here, for example, I once bought a 1985 Civic 1500S that was beautiful. Like original paint, low KMs, rust free. I paid $205 for it. The front bumper had been hit from the side, and was pushed over about 2 inches. I figured it was an easy fix, having never tried to put a salvage car back on the road again at that time. Nope, sure wasn't. Once you got it repaired, you needed a provincial safety inspection, a frame inspection, and, get this, a headlight alignment inspection! Yup, that's right, you actually had to pay someone to check that your headlights were aligned correctly. It's a real racket here to get this stuff done, I just don't bother anymore, it's not worth the grief.

1 owner 92k original miles. XFI
This is a 1 owner 1990 Geo metro xfi. 92k original miles. it was traded in a nissan dealership. I am trying to get my hands on it. it is by far the nicest example of an xfi I have ever seen.

Good luck!
What's your plan—hoard it, sell it on, ...maybe eco-mod the sucker?
If you do a boattail, look at the VW GTI w12-650. Bring air in the rear quarter windows and out through the hatch and you could reduce the wake by some % with no other changes.

Wow, that's a good find! I really doubt that the sales manager at a Nissan dealership knows the niche market for an XFi vs a regular Metro. Either way I would be surprised if they gave the guy anything more than $300 trade in value for it. Of course, that doesn't mean they will sell it for anywhere near that cheap! What were they asking for it?
Here's something I am surprised I didn't end up owning. '88-'91 Civic wagons are pretty much my favorite eco-car. This '90 was donated to charity, and sold at an auction. 154k kms (95k miles). But it had 2 things going against it - 1. automatic 2. aftermarket sunroof. Some things just really bother me in cars, and one of them is an aftermarket pop up sunroof. The roofs in the wagons tend to be flimsy to start with, once someone hacks a big hole in it they aren't helping that situation at all! And with the amount of rain we get here, the last thing you want is a leaky sunroof.

I suspect you'd be excited about the manual AWD version of that Civic, yeah?

Yes and no. I like them, but I just don't like the fact that they are full time AWD. Plus the AWD models only came with a 1.6L, not the 1.5L, as far as I know anyway. Tercel 4wd wagons with selectable 4wd from that era should be my first choice, but they were never available with fuel injection. And while the Corolla 4wd wagon was fuel injected, now the car is getting too big. I'm picky, who knew? ha ha. If the Civic AWD wagon was selectable 4wd then it would be my #1 choice for sure.
I should see if I can find a pic of my ex's car. I got it for her in 2000. 1987 Tercel 4wd base model wagon, out of an estate sale. In 2000, it had 62k KMs (38k miles). She walks to work, and the car stays in the underground parkade. As of this May when I put air in the tires for her, it had 83k KMs (51k miles). Onnnnne day she'll decide to get a new car, and needless to say, the lineup to buy that Tercel off her starts right behind me ha ha

I would probably keep it for a week or two and then ebay it. I like my Insight too much to replace it.
