I always thought that speedo error as you mentioned, never reflects to actual distance. I mean that car computer calculates distance in same way and gathering same data as Scangauge. Only speedo have deviation.

Hi,
After few weeks there will be 1200 km eco rally, what tips for VW Lupo. Can i use with it Pulse and glide technique (frankly speaking, I still understand idea of it). Can I switch off engine before downhill and go to neutral gear?

IMHO
1) Yes. Although depending on speed. We have been wondering about the benefits a little here. I would be interested in your findings on this for both the A6 and Lupo.
2) Yes, as long as you let the turbo cool down before shutting off so you don't get heat soak.
Good luck with the rally.

If you haven't tried pulse and glide, I wouldn't use it on an eco rally.
Try it first, and see if it works.
See if it really works, not if works on a Scangauge !
The Scangauge will display faulty, low values when it isn't calibrated using pulse and glide.

If you don't need engine braking to keep the speed under control, you certainly can.
You'll lose the powersteering and brake assist !!!

1) But when you pulse, and glide mode you need to coast in neutral gear or leave it in 5th gear?
2) I don't think, that it is harmful for engine, because load in eco rallies are very minimal

Meanwhile not so much, but it will be in March, and will be 15 max participants.

See upper post, i don't know how to do this, nowhere is written, procedure of it.

The Scangauge will display faulty, low values when it isn't calibrated using pulse and glide.
Meanwhile SG2 shows very optimistic figures. I.e. in very cold month, it shows tank average 5.2 l / 100 km, despite fact, that i drive in short distance, when engine coolant reaches only 30-40°C.

Lupo doesn't have power steering And braking is not big issue in ecorally, cause if you use brake = you loose

Arturasz, when you pulse & glide you accelerate to more than the average speed you want to have, then you put the transmission into neutral and glide until your speed is 15-30 km/h lower, then you put it into gear and accelerate again. Some ecodrivers shut the engine off in the glide phase, but it is not advised to this until you feel good with engine-on gliding. Also, turbodiesel engines shouldn't be turned on and off too often, so it would be better for you to practice gliding with your engine on.
Since your engine is usually cold, you should have your grilles blocked and have thermal insulation around the engine - just enough to keep it from overheating (depends on time of the year).
When you go to the ecodriving rally, warm up your engine just before your start - drive 20-30km, for example.

I coast in neutral.
I don't know about the Lupo, but my clutch is hydraulic, so keeping the clutch plates apart while you push in the clutch requires power, and that power has to come from somewhere.

For a conventional manual car I don't think the clutch is "powered" so the only energy being used is your leg - you are pulling (cable) or pushing (hydraulic) against the spring. Holding it in for a long time increases wear on the thrust bearings though.
