I listen to SA for the occasional honesty he's willing to slap people with that nobody else is willing to say.

About a week ago, he asserted that we're subconsciously or consciously ok with losers ODing in the streets. He didn't say losers because even he tries to make a point palatable, but that's what he's saying.

He views drug addicted individuals as entirely possessed by drugs and completely incapable of acting in their interest, and then assumes most others have the same understanding, and therefore resign themselves to the outcome of dying early in the streets. That doesn't seem an unreasonable frame to me.

As far as I can tell, we have only 2 options. 1. resign ourselves to the fact that some are completely overcome by their illness, whether it be drug addiction or violent thoughts (CO shooting most recently) and that autonomy of being is more important than safety, or 2. that there are instances where freedom and autonomy should be curtailed for the safety of individuals and society.

There isn't a 3rd option so far as I can tell. While I'm always erring on the side of liberty, I don't think kindness is allowing individuals to unleash their delusions on themselves and others in tragic ways. While I wasn't around in the 70's when perhaps involuntary confinement and treatment abused folks like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, I have been around for the period of time where absolutely insane and destructive people regularly inhabit the streets.

The 70s were awesome. Did you read Sometimes A Great Notion? Kesey was a jock that could relate to deadheads.

I agree most with Adams's stance on the cartels. It's happend before -- 1846 and 1916 IIRC. Yup. And yup.

I don't agree they would thank us. But that wouldn't be the point.

Let the Warthog sing the song of it's people.

I figure most decades have their ups and downs. I mean, Vietnam war in the 70s... I think fondly of the years comprising my youth too, and that included the tech crash and 9/11 (not to mention a year of incarceration).

The '20s aren't off to a good start.

I watched "Sometimes a Great Notion". Paul Newman, right? It's been a long time so I'm not getting the reference, plus I only get about 1/3rd of your references (I think) typically.

For instance, I'm thinking the warthog reference is related to brrrrrrrrp, but I'm never certain with your context-lite references.

I've always had a hard time placing more blame on the supplier than the customer. Addiction to wealth and power is at least as much a thing as addiction to substances; both are chemical addictions formed in the mind. I suppose from a practical standpoint it's easier to take out the fewer suppliers than the multitudes of buyers.

Cartels? Warthog? Whatever is he on about?

I saw the movie. It was like these Hollywood types mouthing the Stamper's truths. Confusing.

Alabama - Song Of The South Lyrics | AZLyrics.com
Well somebody told us Wall Street fell But we were so poor that we couldn't tell The cotton was short, and the weeds was' tall But Mr. Roosevelt's a'gonna save us all Well momma got sick, and daddy got down The county got the farm, and we moved to town Poppa got a job with the TVA We bought a washing machine, and then a Chevrolet Singing
It was pretty much like that for me.

Some things take many decades. In the 70s or 80s I saw someone predict that Chyna would use pornography to destroy the West. I thought how can they do that with that?

But here we are today with TikTok promoting self-mutilation.

I don't understand the meaning of most lyrics, especially those well before my time. Southern Democrat sounds like reference to racism to me. FDR... my only context is he likely prolonged the suffering of the depression, though how much impact does any one individual really have?

Political parties mean very little to me. I've never noticed good and bad times being all that different.

I've been noticing everything costing 30% more than it used to, if you can get it.

Sure, we're not experiencing communism levels of lack of goods, but our collective knowledge should be continually bending towards better and better, not worse and worse.

I know it's a temporary decline, and that as far as declines go, things could be much worse. But as far as declines go, we can entertain our stupid short-sighted motivations and prolong a bad situation as FDR, or we can entertain our rational and long-term motivations to propel progress.

Increasingly we're taking the shorter, less sophisticated option.

My past performance does not guarantee any particular future result. IMHO if we get a good Speaker of the House in January, the ship of State could right very quickly.

Being anti-FDR is being ableist. Biden/Fetterman 2024. /sarc

Have you seen what's happening around the World? In Brazil, Lula attacks the bank accounts of the trucker protesters just like Trudea. In Sweden they elect a male Prime Minister and first thing he converts 300,000 permanent visas to temporary.

Ringo Starr is trying to save the World, through music.

LOL, I had a moment of panic as my default is taking everything at face value. Then I read on and had a very great laugh.

Do you listen to the Bari podcast called "Honestly"? It's very good, and I believe the latest episode was in reference to the debate about intervention vs acceptance with respect to what we consider illness vs difference.

Bari is now my favorite interviewer. Surpassed Larry King and Dave Rubin.
