The evacuation checklist my company forwarded to employees today specifically told people not to leave their sprinklers on when they evacuate. If too many people turn on their sprinklers the municipal water pressure drops and firefighters don't have the water they need at hydrants to fight the fire.
Checklist is here: https://www.readyforwildfire.org/pre...aration-steps/

It's happened to me my neighbors.
2.5 trailers in my gated community lost when the hydrants were dry. But I managed to save a tree and probably the two trailers under it with a garden hose.
Now I have a 330 gallon polypropylene tank in a metal cage, like this:

Next step is an irrigation pump.

Hogging all of the water yourself kind of sounds like not dimming your brights--for safety!
If only there were an easy way to separate nitrogen from air. Leave your nitrogen generator going when you leave and what can burn?
Or breathe...
Breathing is problematic anyway...

Hardly anyone has fire suppression sprinklers though, so my use (and anyone else with fire suppression) wouldn't matter. That, and it only flows 1 GPM (or is it CFM? Having difficulty making sense of my water meter). This is my 2 sprinklers running.
What percent of neighborhoods have hydrants anyhow? Mine does, but it seems somewhat uncommon.

I have 2 of those exact storage vessels, except mine have diesel in them. I'll light 'em up, you put 'em out.

Maybe for you. I find it refreshing.
I have no idea what was in my tank previously. I certainly wouldn't use it for potable water. But you see flocks of them behind the breweries in The Whitaker.

freebeard- I never could stand Axl. My favorite song of theirs is Welcome To The Jungle. Or as I call it, After 30 Seconds, Axl Opens His Effing Mouth.
rednek- I'm always concerned by people whose actions don't match their ostensible goals (See: most politicians). The more unrelated their actions are, the less wiling I am to accept their claimed associations. I've got to ask who they're really working for.
Xist- stockpiling water ahead of time isn't a bad thing.

I clean my gutters and have metal roofs. Metal roofing and non-combustible siding are the best protection from airborne embers. Do that, and keep your own trees back from the house.

If they became standard as you recommended above then everyone would have them. As it stands today I'm sure plenty of people turned on their landscaping sprinklers. That is what a coworker of mine did. He is on a well so they will run until the power cuts or the pump burns out.

I don't know. Every house I've lived in except 1 had hydrants. (That is 10 houses in 5 states.) The only one that didn't have a hydrant was a dublex outside of town with a well.
