Thinking about a Tercel diesel engine swap

A while back I posted up a ad for a diesel Tercel in Canada that I had found. Ever since, I have been thinking about and now finally looking into what must be done to swap a diesel engine into the a Tercel. It must be a 95 or older Tercel since anything older than 96 is not emissions tested in my area. So, I can't swap this into an echo/yaris which is the intended chassis. Luckily, the Tercel was sold in a 4 door variant that is a requirement for a new car.

Anyway, I finally got a response from an importer who has an engine (pics below). They actually have the next generation engine which is a 1.4 instead of a 1.5. The engine code is 1ND-TV. This engine won't directly mount up to my engine mounts, but the drive shafts will plug right in.

Now, I know next to nothing about this engine, but it comes with everything you see below. I have a hope that some of our overseas people can help me out with knowing what else I might need to get it running? Or perhaps know where I could download a service manual (in english ) or really just any helpful info to ask the importer.

A diesel ecomodded Tercel would be an absolute beast of a car as far as MPGs go... I find my ability to resist this project is quite weak.

Well, I poked around google image search and found something missing right off the bat. There should be an EGR cooler (shiny boxy thing in front of the engine) up front from the looks of it. At least thats what I think it is.

Not much help but it may point you in the right direction - this engine is used in the Auris (think Corolla for overseas types) and possibly the Yaris D4-D this side of the pond. The toyota owners club have a few people who post about it on their forums. The service info for those two cars may be of use.

Diesel vehicles are also exempt in Wisconsin. Can't you convert it to diesel and get the fuel type changed on the title/registration?

I am quite sure that is a inter-cooler on top of the engine and the turbo is at the back of the engine. It is a similar set-up to the supercharged Cooper S.

Good luck, Neddy Seagoon.

I think I'd rather stay with a smaller, lighter vehicle anyway for better mpg. The echo and yaris both weigh more (although a yaris 5 door would be cool). I also wont have to bother with any paperwork if I go 95 or older which is just a bit reassuring.

Yeah, the 1ND-TV was also usedon the Cooper S apparently in addition to the Yaris and Auris.

I did sign up on yarisclubuk.com. It seems to be more of a performance forum, so there arent many diesels on it. But, I'm hoping I can get some info from over there. I guess I'll also look for an Auris forum as well.

Well, unfortunately the other forums I went to were of little use. They're all 'performance' oriented and basically didn't have any knowledgeable diesel users there. That hasn't thwarted me though. I still would love to do this swap.

Diesel fuel, for starters.

I couldn't resist

I'll look around local forums, I know that diesels are very popular on the Continent, so I hope to find something.

That gave me an idea for a Google Search, and I found a UK Toyota forum: Toyota Owners Club UK
