I forgot to say: the car in question in the book is a '39 Ford pickup. Probably 3 on the tree?

Unpossible. 1939 was the last year of the floor shift. It was a popular conversion for later Fords. ...and Fad Ts.

Conversions from floor to tree? Interesting.
I've never had the pleasure of trying an anything-on-the-tree manual vehicle. Would like to though.

Other way around. Column shifters were less precise due to all the linkage.
The only real advantage to a column shift was at the drive-in movies.

I drove a '67 Ford Bronco from 1984 until 1996. 3 on the tree. Averaged about 10 MPG. I miss it a little more than my tonsils. It was fun to drive.

Had factory 3 on the tree on a 78 dodge tradesman. Other advantage was sleeping on the front seat (related to freebeards drive in comment?)

YKYAEM when your wife is looking toward her next car and you tell her that with what she wants it needs to be new. She feels bad about that, then says "Yeah, your last car was new. I mean, it wasn't exactly your dream car, but it was new".
And you just smile inside, taking credit for apparently being a martyr.

Jeez, you're as bad as the drivers I used to work with who thought the tank on the truck was a port-a-potty.
And, Yes, you could, but I'm not sure of the refining process.
