Haha, very true.

Although it seems like Prius drivers are the fastest drivers out there. No wonder there's Prius entries on Fuelly averaging less than 40 MPG.

I don't know how people get less than 40mpg out of a Prius on the highway. Even when I have the cruise set to 80 or a bit more (yes, I'm the Prius driver usually passing people :P ), I still get mid-40s. Short trips around town I can see getting less than 40mpg, especially in extreme temperatures.

The only time I got under 40 MPG driving my mom's Prius was doing pizza delivery with it one day when I had something going on with my Insight. It was very cold outside, I had a very aero-killing sign on top of the car, and the day was filled with short trips on a cold engine most of the time, and I got 38.9 MPG for the day.

I drove it for a few days recently while waiting for a catalytic for my Insight and got around 50 MPG doing deliveries around town with that ugly sign on the car. I took it on the highway on one run and got 36 MPG at 70 MPH....but that was with the aero-killing sign.

Other than that it's always above 40 MPG, regardless of driver and driving style. The Prius is a really efficient vehicle.

True, and that's why I'm "un-hybrid-ing" my Insight, because my fuel economy is the same with or without the hybrid battery, and I want more storage space in the car for college. But my mom drives well over 20k miles a year, and isn't an extreme hypermiler, so driving a car that is very fuel efficient regardless of driving style is key for her. Her annual fuel cost has literally been cut in half with the Prius versus the Sienna minivan that kissed a deer last year.

In ND where I'm from, it's fairly common to be going 85 (my wife is a lead foot, I don't go that fast) and have people go past who are obviously doing 10+ mph more than us. Granted it's usually lifted 4WD pickups, not prii, but I have seen hybrids and econoboxes do it too. Of course this is also the land of the flat and straight, about 75% of the east-west drive through the state is absolutely flat, and if you stop at Dickinson it's more like 90%

It takes loooong distances for real speed to make sense. But when it does, it makes a lot of sense.

When you get told once or twice a day: "Why don't you get a newer pickup like the rest of us, instead of driving that old Geo?"

PS I'm something of a desk jockey, and my cohorts like to act richer than they are.

When it's late afternoon and your tank mpg display is close enough to your clock to cause confusion.
