FWD is better than RWD in the snow. With the possible exception of the classic rear engined VW's but that's debatable.

when the punk that was on your bumper while coasting down the off-ramp of the motorway, is nowhere to be seen during the swift 180° turn that follows it, then shoots past you on the straight, only to stand next to you 100m further because he too has to yield to crossing traffic.

when your girlfriend and one of her friends ride somewhere and her friend has a confused look on her face when you put the car in neutral, followed by a terrified look when you shut off the engine.

for 99.9999% of my driving (on road) it makes zero difference and the handbrake makes up the difference and then some (independent front/rear braking). And given the cost and availability of small fwd and associated parts, there is no comparison.
For efficiency, far more important to have a stick shift IMHO.

I am considering an MMT (Multi Mode Transmission) on my next car - auto convenience, manual efficiency and override if needed. What kills it ? Can't get neutral from any gear.

Won't they let you go from M to E to N without jumping gear? In my family's Sonata (auto with "manual" gear selection) I can jump from manual to drive to neutral faster than the computer will change gear (I use it engine brake down a slope then coast to a stop sign). I know it's not quite the same, but I would think if anything the lag would be longer, allowing for neutral from any gear.
