There's no point in renewables if the output cannot be throttled. You'd need to build the reactor to supply 100% of peak demand, at which point renewables are pointless since anything they generate would just be wasted.

The reactor is one component of a system. You'd need to build the system with buffering, caching and load balancing included.

the reactor core averages 100%. The Salt thermal storage charges or discharges at another 100%. The turbines are scaled to provide 200% of the core (core output plus salt output. 100% electrical in morning and evening. 200% electrical at night or 6 pm cooling peak. 0% electrical / 100% thermal storage when solar is cranking.

Sure, but the point remains.

That doesn't solve the problem of the intermittency of renewables. You might be able to build the system to cope with normal fluctuations due to day / night, but a couple unexpected weeks of overcast creates an energy deficit. The nuke output still has to be sized to supply 100% of the demand 100% of the time, and if it cannot be throttled, then there is no benefit to renewables.

[Not sure if serious]

100% of it's share, surely?

Renewables vary in their intermittency. The ones based on gravity are reliable, tides and hydro. Geo thermal is no problem. Wind and solar vary the most, but it's always not cloudy somewhere (or so I hear).

Not enough people are talking about Deep Bore Geothermal. Awesome resource.

It is bizarre, though, you can say almost anything and people will revile, insult, and curse at you. "No, I was agreeing with you!"

Posts have 100 - 200 responses, mostly people abusing each other.

What is the point?

Rational discussion rarely changes people's mind. Insults never do, but you showed them!

There was a post on a sister site that said the way to win an argument was to find common ground, agree with them where you can, and then point out the parts where they are absolutely, totally, and unequivocally wrong.

That probably requires skill, or at least practice.
I have practice in terms of politics. But helps if you're already friends with those people otherwise.

Some people will take offense over the mildest thing. After which finding common ground is very difficult.

And probably not worth your while.

Hard to tell the difference nowadays.

You're a brave man. I stay as far away from YouTube comments as possible.

Well I was thinking PV and wind, the 2 most commonly thought of when discussing renewables. Most of best hydro sources have already been exploited.

The idea that some part of the country that is sunny can not only provide its own electrical needs, but supplement some shaded part of the country seems unlikely to me.

Storing excess generating capacity via pumped hydro or other some such potential kinetic energy sounds reasonable to me.

I'm still not seeing how renewables factor in when sufficient and non-adjustable output nuclear power is available.

Youtube?! Youtube?! This video was on the nightly news, but hardly has any views. Does anyone know how to make it landscape? I wish people would stop holding their phone the wrong way!

What's the backstory on this?

I get the impression AZ is competing for most backwards policing award. It's not fair for me to lump all AZ LEOs into a single group, but I see a lot of ridiculous stuff coming from the state.

There will be a time when K9 attack is no longer allowed as a police tool. They aren't agents of reason, but agents of instinct and cannot be adequately controlled. If you fight back to protect yourself from serious injury, you'll get charged with assaulting an officer, but the dog has no restraint.

The K-9 was improperly trained. Apparently, during training, officers hold them up to encourage them to sic the suspect, but that was considered absolutely the wrong course of action at this point. I tried to edit the video. Is this easier to see?

Somehow when I made a gif I got an mp4. No idea.
