Frank Lee — Go to Youtube and search on 'clown world'. It's the latest thing. I have the same epiphany when I ride a local feeder freeway and see the endless fields of suburban houses and concentrati apartment blocks.

I know I go on about Scott Adams, but his conclusion is that carbon is a solved problem, as you say. With the caveat that we're talking about Fourth Gen nuclear with the understanding that it is melt-down proof (it takes power to maintain the reaction cycle, anything bad happens it goes down) and that it eats radioactive [waste/materials].

The difference between a pressured water reactor melt down and a boiling water meltdown is all you need to know. Chernobyl and fukushima were boilers, 3 mile island was pressurized. Boiling water reactors tend to blow up, pressurized not so much.

I'm 37 and about to have my first kid.
Been driving a leaf for almost a year now and picking up a plug in hybrid with in the next 7 days.
I do have a V8, I only put 10 to 50 gallons of fuel per year in it.

The math sez 0, 1, or 2 kids = a skosh less than replacement level reproduction which is fine. Either 99% of breeders are really bad at math, or they don't care.

I could just as easily say that paranoid overpopulation believes are just looking too short term, as the evidence clearly shows a decreasing population growth rate, which will turn negative within my lifetime. The long term problem then is under population.

The US has a negative growth rate, except for immigration. We're not the overpopulation problem. Those that aren't breeding aren't pulling their weight, as replacing the human population is the most important task, and among the most sacrificial one can make.

Too many people, if that is a problem, is one that has existed for practically zero time when measured by all of human history, and it's one that is already being taken care of.

...and if you don't like to be social, there's plenty of room in Alaska. Living near a Walmart is simply being a glutton for punishment.

One could give a reasoned and intelligent response.

Sorry again. Continued growth is the short sighted economic band aid to our already debt problem. Population is still increasing exponentially and is headed to the sharper end of the hockey stick even if it is down to 1.1%. Resource depletion is looming and we are already several decades into overshoot, propped up by cheap fossil fuel. Renewable energy and electrification will not match the current levels of living standard. There will be an economic collapse. The only question is will we voluntarily bend back down to a simpler lifestyle? Or wait until it all breaks.

Oh the problems, that afflict a single-planetary species.

Timothy Leary advocated SMI2LE, space migration, increased intelligence and life extension. The three work together. I think the increased intelligence is happening already. Starting with lowering launch costs so orbit is achievable for the masses.

Frank Lee — I compare Clown World to John Denver's "Life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle". Or maybe a response to the French Existentialists and Dada.

Or to Black Pill nihilism — to laugh at it. Hey, this is The Lounge:

The first 30 seconds is the Original Meme. The phenomenon has also been commented on by Black Pigeon Speaks, Sargon of Akkad, The Thinkery and MR. OBVIOUS.

How about this?

Tim Pool the voice actor.

And it's not just energy depletion that will force a downward trend on economies. Most resources have been diminished. And have been harvested according to the best, first. So what remains of ore grades and overburden are more energetically remote to get.
.
In Jiangxi province, for instance, the city of Jingdezhen, famed for its high-quality clay, has been a center of porcelain production for centuries, serving both China’s imperial courts and, more recently, American and European markets. But after hundreds of years of exploitation, only about one million tons of clay remain—two percent of the area’s historic reserves.
