So when I disconnected the vacuum line from the PCV valve I nearly got hit in the eye with a few drops of oil that had not made it to the catch can I am removing temporarily for SMOG testing. Seems the catch can will do some catching after all.

Have you seen the Garage 54 channel on YouTube? Some crazy Russians who do all kinds of weird things to old Ladas, with an English voiceover translation.
They stuffed a big GAZ truck 7.0L V8 into one, another they connected two engines end to end to make it a straight 8, then a third engine for a straight 12. Adding a 4th for a straight 16 didn't work out so well, mostly because the old engines are old and tired. The craziest thing they did was buying a pair of doors and all the body panels, windshield frame and top for a Porsche roadster and mounting them on a Lada. |

I LOVE Garage 54. So many crazy projects. Russians are a wild bunch. And I could use some Russians! Today I decided have to miss my August 2 Cali SMOG test deadline and pay a $21 fine. My starter motor is crapping out again. I can get a warranty replacement but I have associated problems and wiring harness mystery failure that I have to fix this time. Buying a hoist. But my daughter offered to help without me asking! She ain't Russian but I'm please for help and entertainment.

I spent the day working on the cosmetics of a GMC 1 ton flatbed with aluminum boxes, not my vehicle, but my daily driver work truck. I had the detail shop blast the boxes with muriatic acid to remove most of the gunk, then set about polishing the diamond plate with a random orbital and many foam pads.

The battle begins
I've done one more pass after this one, I am done.
Tomorrow I will start sandblasting and paint prep of all that bed, headache rack, and pipe rack rust.

I was looking for a secondhand set of tires to put on the car until it's time to really tear into it. No luck. Then I remembered I kept the wheels off the metro which are also 13" rims. Double check and they are the same size as the Fiat's! Now I just gotta decide if it's worth manually changing all of them or if I should just pay a shop to do it.

Great break. If it were me I would have the shop do it, but that's because it's a cheap enough and rare enough need for me that I haven't felt justified to buy a good quality tire mounting thingy.

New starter motor (warranty replacement) is installed and will be solid once blue loctite cures. Had some fun with daugter talking cars while working.

For some time something was rattling at the back of the car. Noticed today that the dust covers of both the shock absorbers are torn and lying loose. Is it worth replacing only these covers or new shock absorbers right away? They are still the original ones.

Factory shocks are reported to last only 35,000 miles. If you are serious about corner handling, do a bounce test or just replace them.
