I don't mind that the "SFE" package requires paying more money. I have no problem with paying more for an option that is not in the "mindset" of a majority of car buyers. The car company is not able to absorb the cost as well on an SFE, so it should cost more.
However, I do mind that the Fiesta SFE "requires" an automatic. At least you should be able to purchase the aero-parts seperately.

Remember though, it's the PowerShift Automatic, not a "conventional" auto. It's a dual clutch 6 speed manual gearbox that's electronically/automatically controlled, dry system. Not a clutch packs and pressure bands automatic.

My reservations about that automatic are as follows:
How easy is it to get in and out of neutral, especially to/from top gear?
Can it handle flat-towing in neutral?
How low will it allow me to hold a gear? Will it step in and "rescue" me from a "wrong" gear selection?
The price. I don't need / want an automatic, and I especially don't want to pay for one.

Yeah, I am sure it's a great tranny, but I am a stickshift snob. I rue the day when all other things being equal, an automatic beats a stickcshift. Thankfully, I don't think that day has arrived (yet).

Understood. I'd want the stick, but for sake of my wife, and for the SFE pack, I reserved mine with the auto. I don't know about flat-tow and all that; I'd assume it's near the same as the manual as it's dry-clutch. SFE gives you factory grill blocks and belly pan, drops the Cd to something under .30.
Is the Cruze going to be in the same class as the Fiesta? It looks a LOT bigger (Focus territory).
Eventually, Ford is going to make a 1.0L 3-banger EcoBoost available. The engine already exists, just not available for sale yet.

I agree that the Cruze is Focus class. The Fiesta would be more likely to compete with the Chevy "Beat now called the Spark", assuming that car makes it to the USA.

Some more specs of the "XFE" version of the Cruze have been released.
First off, they're not calling it the "XFE". It's the Cruze Eco.
Second, they're sticking to their guns: 40 mpg highway, and " expected to deliver the best fuel economy in the compact segment."
Quote:
The axle ratio on the manual-transmission model is also optimized for fuel economy, while helping the car deliver confident performance.
Chevrolet estimates the Cruze Eco will deliver 0-60 mph performance of about 10 seconds with the manual transmission and 9 seconds with the six-speed automatic. Featuring an Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine with variable valve timing, the Cruze Eco is designed to be the most fuel-efficient model in the lineup, delivering an estimated 40 mpg on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission. City fuel economy, as well as estimates for the Cruze Eco equipped with an available six-speed automatic transmission, will be finalized closer to launch.
The Eco achieves greater fuel economy using a number of features that enhance its aerodynamics, minimize weight and reduce rolling resistance. Details include:
- A lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow
- The upper grille has more "closeouts" to improve aerodynamics
- A lower front air dam extension, extensive use of underbody panels and a rear spoiler enhance aerodynamics
- A lowered ride height improves aerodynamics
- Unique 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels
- Ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires.
The Cruze Eco will be available in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Aeromods plus a 1.4L turbocharged engine and an eco-geared manual tranny should make this an attractive little car.
The first mods I'd do are an engine kill switch, a ScanGauge, and a 100% upper grille block. What other mods do you think it needs?
