But only 3, maybe 4 are realistic.

Hundreds of pounds of coal per ton of steel is the best thing since sliced bread.
That's drops in the bucket compared to electrical power production.

The suggestions? Or the locations for tidal power?
There are interesting places like New Zealand and Panama where if someone is proposing tidal power on the East coast they're blowing smoke, while proposals for their West coast would be perfectly cromulent.

In the US tidal power will likely be blocked on the east coast by nimbys
Most people who live on the coast will say they want it, just not where they live.
So for tidal power is for anywhere the nimbys aren't.
Other countries with 40 to 50 cent per kwh power might be more accepting.
Pumped hydro, already have it, already doing it, but like all hydropower in the US, we have already built as much as we are going to have. Again nimbys, nimbys hate pipe lines, they will block anything pipe line relayed even when it comes to clean energy.
Hydrogen is stupid.
Compressed air will work but it suffers from 50% efficiency.
Thermal energy kind of works, it's expensive and requires at least some natural gas, for electricity production.
Battery storage will work especially if it's molten salt based. But can't really make them out of Ni, Pb or Li.
I don't think fly wheels have ever rally worked real well.
Gravity batteries could, the the automatic wall building crane bot.

In the USofA, it appears the locale is the Alaskan panhandle.
It makes you pine for the fjords. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Fjords_of_Alaska
For gravity, pick-and-place robots might be efficient. But I like rack railroads.

According this image the didal power usines only produces energy (electricity) while discharging the water, and not when filling the reservatory.
Why can't it use some turbine to generate electricity while the tidal is raising the water (filling the reservoir) ???
If the holes of the other turbines could be closes, ther ewould be anough water flux to move just some turbines and generate electricity.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillating_water_column
Quote:
Oscillating water columns (OWCs) are a type of Wave Energy Converter (WEC)[1] that harness energy from the oscillation of the seawater inside a chamber or hollow caused by the action of waves. OWCs have shown promise as a renewable energy source with low environmental impact... OWC are devices with a semi-submerged chamber or hollow open to the sea below, keeping a trapped air pocket above a water column. Waves force the column to act like a piston, moving up and down, forcing the air out of the chamber and back into it. This continuous movement force a bidirectional stream of high-velocity air, which is channelled through a Power-Take-Off (PTO). The PTO system converts the airflow into energy. In models that convert airflow to electricity, the PTO system consists of a bidirectional turbine. This means that the turbine always spins the same direction regardless of the direction of airflow, allowing for energy to be continuously generated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_ram
Quote:
A hydraulic ram, or hydram, is a cyclic water pump powered by hydropower. It takes in water at one "hydraulic head" (pressure) and flow rate, and outputs water at a higher hydraulic head and lower flow rate. The device uses the water hammer effect to develop pressure that allows a portion of the input water that powers the pump to be lifted to a point higher than where the water originally started. The hydraulic ram is sometimes used in remote areas, where there is both a source of low-head hydropower and a need for pumping water to a destination higher in elevation than the source. In this situation, the ram is often useful, since it requires no outside source of power other than the kinetic energy of flowing water.
|
The oscillating water column is billed as a wave power solution, but I think the principle applies to tidal power as well. The Hydraulic ram could be used to lift water above high tide.

You cannot even see some tidal systems. They are being built in the Bay of Fundy, in Cobscook.

Let them. The US East coast is no more blessed than California. The Bay of Fundy is way to the north.
The real losers are the third coast.
