The controller itself isn't that big, but there is a piece of aluminum on it that roughly doubles the size of the thing. So I figure with a heat sink that big heat might be an issue with it.

Also, went to start the car today and the adjustment bolt on the alternator had snapped. I hadn't done anything to it. The thing just seemingly snapped on it's own. Oh well, borrow a car and hunt down a new bolt and I'm back in business.

it is really easy to overtorque adjustment bolts. been there done that. Make sure to check the deflection of the belt at the longest span between pulleys. IIRC, the standard is 1" deflection per foot of span, which gives you a suprisingly loose belt.

The best belt tensioner I've seen for serpentine belts is a self adjusting spring loaded variety used extensively by GM and Ford. It keeps the belt tight, but not so much to break anything, and allows for the slight stretching a belt can experience over time. That and it's more or less idiot proof.

Wish I could tell you how many adjustment bolts I've broken over the years. But I lost count a long time ago.

I know in industrial usage, the belt tension is loose enough to allow you to roll the belt on and off with just a bit of difficulty. I suppose it is partly due to prefering to burn a $20 belt if things get hung up than a $1000 electric motor due to the belt being so tight it won't let the motor spin if something hangs up the gear box.

Heh, this is the electric motor wiring. It has nothing to do with the car itself. As far as the bolt breaking, it's been seriously abused the past few weeks with the amount of times I've taken it on and off. Something was bound to go with the number of times (several hundred, in all honesty) I've had to check the belt for the walking issue I had.

Working with the wiring harness today (where I'm still not 100% sure what to do) I realized the controller should be mounted extremely close to the motor itself. The wiring for it is only a foot or so long. I'm going to extend it as I still plan to keep it inside the cabin. There is simply not enough room in the engine bay, and I'd worry about the engine heat not helping the controller cool down, as in ever. Plus I'd be OK having a mini heater in the car most of the time. (: The contactor should not be much of a problem however. I can easily fit it in the engine bay.

The throttle for now I am going to mount on the side of the the transmission tunnel, near my leg. I'd like to eventually get it set up to mount on the shifter, but for now this will work and not be in the way.

Welp, I was hoping to have everything but the batteries done today, but I've just ran out of time. I'm taking the remaining parts with me to florida for my 2 week trip, and hopefully I'll have some down time when Im' not working to work on this project some.

I was talking to my wife the other day about how amazed I am at the number of miles you've traveled according to your log. She then suprised me with a factoid of her own. In 8 months of owning our Maxima, we've put over 20,000 miles on it. Remember that the furthest we drive on a daily basis is a bit over 10 miles, but we've let others borrow it for maybe 5,000 of those miles. I guess there's just something about driving a car designed to ride like a Buick but take off and sound like a race car.

Of course, the sound may have to do with the large glass pack that replaced the OEM muffler when the rust monster got a bit frisky. It sounds great at moderate throttle but barely rumbles at cruise, and isn't alll that loud either. That and it's not one of those silly mufflers that are made to sound like a high revving engine, but rather like the sound of a low revving v-8.

Yeah, the car sees a lot of miles. About time for the timing belt too (at 165k, I'm at 145).

I don't know if I'll be able to do any work on this at all. I am seeing a new check engine light (1445) and am going to have to take care of it since I'm 1000 miles from home and don't want a problem. It doesen't seem like a major issue, however.

Looks like an Evap purge valve issue. You knock any vacuum hoses or connectors off your charcoal canister while working on this?
