While its kind of a bummer they're having to have stuff fixed, at least they are fixing the problems! Other makers have been known to just ship junk...

You need to look closely at the body trim lines on an actual new car then tell me they aren't shipping junk

I have never seen a Tesla up close. And I'm not sure that I'm comfortable with their always-on connection, data-logging everything approach.
Tesla, from the outside looking in, does not seem to be held to the same standards as the other auto makers regarding problems with production, fit and finish, etc. Those who like Tesla appear to be willing to downplay these problems.
IMHO, if the people driving them are happy with them - great! Those who are not customers may not get it ... I know that I don't .. but maybe that's not really relevant? Tesla has to keep their customers happy, like every other business. Others can have an opinion .. but perhaps Tesla is a bit less worried about the non-customer opinions? Not sure - if there were fewer non-customer complaints maybe there would be more customers?
The reservations for the Model 3 are still stacked up ... are they still at 400,000? I haven't heard for a while ...

Exactly. I don't see why people like Apple products, but that doesn't stop them from lining up to fork over big bucks for them. We have different consumer preferences.
Perhaps Model 3 limited availability is like the nightclub with a line wrapping around the building. People could just go somewhere else, but that line represents demand, and things in limited supply are desirable.
I wonder when the first Dateline will be that has a murder solved by the data uploaded to Tesla servers?
As a millennial, I'm less offended by opting in to have my data gathered in exchange for some convenience. I can hear freebeard cringing now...

I think I'm classified as one of the last years of the baby boomers ... well, let's just say I'm OLD and leave it at that. And getting more paranoid the older I get
Is the opt-in for APPLE and TESLA buying their stuff?

I didn't realize I was so loud.
The last time I went to the Eugen Macintosh User's Group meeting I wanted to rant about Facebook and https://noyb.eu/. What did I get? Seeing my own face on the Club's Facebook page, posted with the presumption that I need have no voice in the matter.
Opting-in would be a nice option.

Jack Rickard just established that a total wreck Model 3 is worth $22.5K.

To answer the question above, yes, you opt in to data collection when you sign up or purchase certain products. For example, the Facebook privacy policy is available to be read prior to creating an account. While I don't often read every word in a privacy policy, I do skim through them to get a general sense for their practices.
I care less about businesses collecting my info because I'm among the most difficult to market to. I'm very unsusceptible to tactics that would cause me to make a purchase based on emotion or convenience. Advertising is mostly wasted on me except for informing me that a product exists, and I seek out least marketed goods in general. Boycott any company running "You deserve" ads.

Well, my marriage certificate has "nunya" listed for my occupation. I had no idea when I applied for one that it would go on some official looking certificate. It annoys my wife about as much as it delights me. While individuals can judge me however they wish, the government has no business categorizing me as anything except a citizen of the US. It's appalling to me that I must apply for a marriage license. I'm not asking the government for permission to marry, and I regard their certificate as nothing. I have a natural right to associate and enter into contract how I see fit.

Misspelled ninja, eh?
Facebook's inflection point: Now everyone knows this greedy mass surveillance operation for what it is

Make 'em pay
Imagine, if you will, a new Android phone where location data was truly yours to control. By law it was firewalled off from the world on first boot. You could then choose who it went to, and those location services would have to compete for your data. Perhaps they'd give you rebates to go with them. There'd be an instant market for your data – and if they squirted it to a third party they'd lose you.
And now imagine something that paid you pennies for that funny photo, rather than you popping it online for free. There's no end to it. This kind of consumer choice is greedy Silicon Valley's real nightmare:....
