Oh wow I like the beetle oven!

I hear you on the lack of accomplishment today. But here's the thing. I found a cheap local '60 split window panel bus that I've been keeping an eye on. But even its cheap price is a bit more than I have in cash. I'm half tempted to buy it instead of a beetle delivery since its got real value. Where as a beetle delivery (to use a Samba term) b*stard won't have any real value by comparison. (giggles to himself...)

I like the beetle a bit more. But the van is a different kind of cool. Its lowered with a 1600DP with twin carbs, 009 dist, etc. Its rougher condition, but runs and drives. Also some meathead put a couple house windows in the side of it. However I can fix that abomination and swap it back to stock. But ultimately its cool enough to make it very considerable, if you can visualize the dilemma.

In reply to myself, I went and looked at the bus real close on Monday. I climbed all over it (literally). I also checked out a '76 standard beetle, a '74 standard beetle, and a couple convertible beetles just because they were there. I was really interested in the '77 which is actually a '76 (typo on the listing) until I crawled around and under it. It has a lot of rust in places that I don't want to deal with. For example there's an arm length rust hole through the inside of the engine compartment. Yes I could weld it closed. But its an example of how bad the normal rust areas were! So I had to pass on its $4k price tag when its a giant rust bucket. So that's all the info that I have on that topic at this time. The search goes on....

Edit: Also I learned exactly how the bus cooling works from the side vents to the engine compartment. This proves to me that my louvered engine compartment idea will actually work!

Most of the pic's that I've been sharing have come from "Rust is not a crime", or AZN's "Dung Beetle" page. The abortions topic is always good for a laugh!

So I have a question for you since there's very little going on right now. I have a pair of type3 engine pic's. Correct me where I'm mistaken, but are the red arrows where the engine draws in air?

Then the Orange arrows, those are ducted for the cars heater?
Then the Green arrow is the hot air exit under the rear apron?
Is all this correct?

No, yes and no.

The problem with your pictures is the one has the heater boxes and the other doesn't. The green arrow is where the rubber bellow attaches, visible in the last picture.

Then I guess the air goes the other way, drawn in from the green arrow?
If that is correct, then the fender vents are somehow connected to the rubber bellow.
Then the red arrows are the heater outputs?
Where does the hot air exit at?

I told you previously that I have a morbid fascination with VW's. But its an alien concept from my history with American cars.... I have some gaps in my understanding of these things. Although climbing around them a couple days ago did fill in some gaps.

Here's a weird one....

Another weirdo....

The fenders and rear valance are double-walled.

Have you seen the route air takes in the Type III Notchback? In just below the backlight as on a Beetle, but then out to the sides, back through the fenders (where the Squareback picks it up) down to a plenum in the rear valance, and then forward into the engine.

That second one is the military replacement for the Type 181/Trekker/Thing.

Nope, I've never seen the path the air takes on any type3's.
It sounds a lot more complicated than a type1, which simply go back to front.

But think about this. If the air was drawn from under the car, then exited through rear apron area. Going simply front to back over/through the engine. Then it would generate down force, and it could direct the hot air to a diffuser. This is the reason why I was being so specific on where the air goes, beyond my not knowing the exact route.

Here's the '60 split window that I've been drooling over for a couple weeks. I can't buy it today. But maybe in a week or two. Its a big maybe.... plus it needs a lot of work. (and I still like the delivery more)

Actually, the Iltis was meant as a replacement for the DKW Munga, known here in Brazil as Candango. The Type 181 had been more focused on recreational and touristic applications by then.
